Using a real Aircraft ADS-B Antenna

Hello all,

Im wondering this, if i can get my hands on a Aircraft ADS-B Antenna:


And i make a bracket to mount it to my chimney (with the vin up in the air), wil it work to get better signal for my SBS-1e?

A friend works in a aircraft maintenance / scrape yard and he maybe can help me get one?

Just a hunch.

If an aircraft antenna performs better than an external, good quality antenna tuned for 1090 MHz, I'm sure more people would be recommending them.

My idea is to put this out side of my house, strait up in the air, if it is sending/receiving ADS-B signal in the air it has to work on ground to

If it works, i will make a DIY about it. The friend told me that it receive about 8-10db when put it strait up next to my house, so lets see what it will do

It'll work, but the question is "will it work better?".

My guess is that due to it's small size it won't be better than a full wave antenna (275mm) or greater.  Aircraft aerials have to be small, so are therefore already compromising performance.

Good luck though.  Let us know how you get on.

And we must ask ourselves what data does an aircraft antenna expect to receive and at what frequency?  Is it other aircraft within close proximity for TCAS or those 250 nautical miles away?

Antennae
The antennas used by TCAS II include a directional antenna that is mounted on the top of the aircraft and either an omnidirectional or a directional antenna mounted on the bottom of the aircraft. Most installations use the optional directional antenna on the bottom of the aircraft. In addition to the two TCAS antennae, two antennae are also required for the Mode S transponder. One antenna is mounted on the top of the aircraft while the other is mounted on the bottom. These antennae enable the Mode S transponder to receive interrogations at 1030 MHz and reply to the received interrogations at 1090 MHz.
