As I await my new SBS-3 to be delivered I have already started to consider how it will be connected over the Network. This is what I have.....

My WIFI DSL Telekom Router is my connection to the Internet. The PC connects to the Router by a WIFI Dongle. My SBS-1 was connected to the Network via a SBSNet module using Powerline adapters. I decided when doing this to bypass the router as I ocassionally got dropouts especially if I was doing a lot of printing or watching a film on the Apple TV streaming from the Internet or the PC. So basically I created a Network Bridge which meant I had a (via Powerline) direct feed into the PC for the SBS-1 and a WIFI feed via the Router for Internet, Printer etc.

My question is, when I get my SBS-3, in the Network setup I would like to use the IP Address for the SBS-3 as 192.168.2.5 which is the same as I used for the SBSNet module. I don't see this as a problem. What I need to know is which IP Address do I use as the Gateway ? Do I use 192.168.2.1 which is the Router, or do I use 192.168.2.7 which is the IP Address assigned to the PC. Like I said, I don't want to go through the Router for Basestation feed due to dropouts. The whole thing with the SBS-1 worked fine but I don't remember a Gateway setting being required. My next question is how could my SBS-3 then feed information to the outside world without the PC being switched on ? I guess I would have to have a feed into the Router aswell, but how can I make sure the Router is bypassed when I want to use Basestation, but goes through the Router if I want to feed information to, say Flightradar 24 or Planeplotter for MLAT ?

This is way above my Networking knowledge, so I hope someone has some ideas ! Thanks for any help.

The Basestation version for the SBS-3 allows you to set the SBS-3 IP and port address.  Use that (via USB) to change the IP address to 192.168.2.5.  Then connect the SBS-3 by Ethernet cable and all should be well running Basestation locally.

If you want to access the SBS-3 from a remote location, it will have to be connected to your router and have port forwarding for its IP address and port.  But the IP address should be within the network address range used by the router, such as 192.168.2.nnn.

Hi Mike. Thanks for that. So I should not have to set a Gateway IP Address in Basestation, it will set it automatically ? I suppose I can add another Powerline adapter in to the system to feed the Router aswell so that I have an outlet to the internet. Thanks for your help.

The Basestation Ethernet Setup requires a Gateway address.  I've just set this to 0.0.0.0 and Basestation connects to the SBS-3 OK using Ethernet via my router.

Whether this will have an impact on connecting other applications to the SBS-3 without Basestation running I have yet to experiment.

Thanks Mike. What does the setting within Basestation.ini say with regards to IP Address and Port if you don't mind me asking ? At the moment (from the SBS-1 setup) mine has this....

[DataInterface]
DataSourceType=1
SocketIntfIPAddress=127.0.0.1
MapModeSSetToUse=0
SocketIntfPort=20060
IsConfigured=1

Is it similar running an SBS-3 ? Just wondering if I need to do a complete re-install of Basestation and lose all my custom settings.

It's the same.

You don't need to re-install Basestation.  What version do you have now?

I am using 1.2.3.174. It's the latest version I think, so in theory if I plug the SBS-3 in and connect with USB first time to set up the IP Address, then it should be OK ? Obvioulsy I have to change the setting in Basestation.ini to DataSourceType = 0 first time as I think this is the setting that differentiates between USB and Network.

Connect via USB and start existing Basestation install.

Change IP address in the Non Volatile Memory Settings tab.

Then change the Network address in Hardware Settings to coincide with the new address.  Remove USB from PC and attach Ethernet cable. also using USB cable to power the SBS-3 via a mains adapter.  Change network source in Basestation to "Use Network".

Wait and hope.
