Using SBS1e wirelessly with Ethernet

I'm new to this forum, so apologies if this is an 'old topic', I have used search and user guides but am looking for current advice.

I have been using a Kinetic SBS1e for many years connected to Laptop via USB. I would like to be able to use it without being directly connected to the PC.

Can anyone offer advice on the best way to achieve this?. Can I use an ethernet cable to a 'bridge' to wirelessly connect the receiver to my router?.  I have seen posts regarding this setup with an SBS3, but not sure if the SBS1e can do the same. Also, can a USB cable be used with a UK mains USB socket to power the SBS1e?.

Many thanks for any help.

I am using Firmware version 402 and Basestation version 1.2.4.184.

Welcome.

The SBS-1e should have an RJ45 Ethernet port at the rear.

You can use a "straight" (not crossover) Ethernet cable to connect the SBS-1e to a router or any other network device with an RJ45 port, such as a wireless bridge or access point.

Remember to change the BaseStation Data Source to Use Network.

Also check your local IP address range.  If it's 192.168.0.nnn and not 192.168.1.nnn, you will have to change the SBS-1e's default IP address of 192.168.1.170.  I can explain this if needed.

Thanks Anmer.

If anyone can recommend a suitable Bridge I would appreciate it.

Yes, I will need to change the IP address.  I'll try to follow the instructions in the user guide. Appreciate your offer of help if I need it when I get the device I need.

I'm in the UK and have successfully used Netgear WiFi range extenders and BT Mesh discs.

Do you need a bridge?  How far from your router is the SBS-1e?  If it's less than 300 metres, you could try a low cost range extender such as this:

Make sure whatever you choose has an RJ45 Ethernet port.

I had a similar problem a few years ago when I wanted to connect my sat TV receiver (which only has a wired Ethernet port) to my wifi.  I wasn't allowed to trail a cable over (or even under) the carpet.  :)

I bought one of these: http://www.vonets.com/ProductViews.asp?D_ID=14

A little fiddly to set up, but works a treat.

Thanks for the suggestions, will look into them.

Hi all,

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Unfortunately the router supplied by Talktalk, an Eero6, doesn't seem to recognise the SBS1e device. When plugged into ports on the router or extender no device is shown connected in the Eero app.  I have contacted Eero suppport who made a couple of suggestions about trying different cables but nothing worked.  They also suggested contacting the manufacture, but sadly Kinetic are no more?.

Has anyone any experience of Eero routers?. I'm guessing I may need a new router if I am to achieve what I want.

Cheers
Derek

I don't think you need a new router.

Do you know the router's local IP address?  Open a Command window and type "ipconfig".

Let us know what you see as "IPv4 Address"

Hi Anmer,

Sorry for delay in responding.

My IPv4 address shows as 192.168.1.24.

Thanks

I don't have an SBS-1e but look at the back panel.  If it's like the one in the attached diagram, are the sliders set correctly?

And is your Ethernet cable from the SBS-1e plugged into your router?

Hi Anmer,

Yes, I have switches configured as in the top diagram.

Sorry, you provided that info in an earlier post.

Can we do a remote connect session sometime so we can take a look together?
