Just to close this thead.

The problem was resolved by changing the USB power source to a 12v DC supply.

To quote a Kinetic advice from many years ago:

"For ethernet you need 9-36v DC centre positive 200ma

It is possible to power via a USB PSU but as most of those power supplies are not up to the job".
