Windows applications for ADSB reception on a dongle

Andy (junglejet) has already produced RTL1090 for decoding ADSB and sending output to PlanePlotter.

Time for an update to the Windows applications:

I have a "nettop" ER1402 PC  (=netbook without the screen/keyboard) in the loft attached to the dongle transmitting data over ethernet to PP.

I was using an R820T dongle but there maybe something wrong with that dongle -now swapped to the original E4000 dongle. Also I now have a Radarbox antenna coupled to a dongle cable which probably improves things.

Using this setup RTL1090 now has much better range than I was finding previously. With the new combination, RTL1090  sets up the gain automatically which it was not doing before(?). RTL1090 now has a web page at http://rtl1090.web99.de/ where you can download and read the instructions.

The other software (from the SDRSharp developer) has been through various revisions but although I was seeing contacts in the aircraft window of PP, none showed latitude/longitude data and hence would not plot (note: some of these same contacts plotted fine from an SBS-1e).

The latest version from here http://sdrsharp.com/index.php/a-simple-and-cheap-ads-b-receiver-using-rtl-sdr has a minimalist GUI, but for me it does now plot contacts in PP with a range out to 125 miles. Again this is with the E4000 dongle.

So there are now two options for ADSB reception in Windows. Both are free so try them out and see which you prefer.

Edit: I need to check out various setup scenarios (eg try R820T again) to see what effect they have.

Might want to fix/double check that VirtualRadar links in the above post! (Need a space between each URL).  There was another thread with the same error.
