I am very happy. So far had used the desktop antenna that came with my dongle, achieving a maximum range of 50nm, because Santiago is surrounded almost on all sides by mountains. In fact living at 12nm south of SCEL (with traffic in a N-S direcction), could not see any aircraft approaching the airport, just departing traffic only. Using the instructions provided by this internet page http://www.atouk.com/wordpress/?p=273, built my own antenna ads-b. To test its effectiveness before getting on the roof of my house to mount, connect the antenna to my computer to see if everything had gone well and was receiving signal. Once inside the house, I had an auspicious progress, seeing contacts to 64nm ... So I set to work, and mount the antenna on a PVC tube of 2 meters, and place it above the ceiling. The results have been spectacular last night ranges achieve maximums of 190nm with aircraft at 35,000 ft high. SCEL approaching aircraft before could not see, now lose contact to 1850ft in height, that is almost ready to touch runway. The following steps will have to be developed, see how to protect the antenna to avoid climatic effects. Also a protection in case of electrical storm, enable a proper workstation ... and so we are making progress ;)

In the attachment you can see the antenna as it looked when completed, Basestation with its outer ring marking a range of 190nm, for a LAN A320 at 35900 ft in height, and an image from Google Earth with the height at which they lose signal aircraft before landing at SCEL.

Now that you have been bit by the bug, try making the 1090 colinear, i get much better results. Mine is made with cheap 75ohm satelite cable for cheapness, now i know it works well i'll make another one using rg213 and brass ferule

Yes, is a good idea. I try with this model because it is much easier, and have on hand the materials.  I expected a range of about 100 nautical miles, as I read in the instructions, I never imagined reaching 190nm. I imagine then that could reach a 250nm with the collinear desing...

Wonderful!  Thanks for sharing your progress.  My dongle just arrived this week.  I just took it out of the package and will experiment with the included antenna, but soon expect to create an antenna of some sort for mounting outside.

Thanks for your comments I tell you that I have in Chillan, in the south of Chile to 430 km south of the capital Santiago. I travel regularly to there, and this weekend happened I went with my antenna. here are some pictures of both Basestation, as google earth. With desktop antenna achieve a maximum range of 67nm, and this next weekend be installing an antenna like the one I manufacture here in Santiago. When I get the results, post them.
