UK airports, including Luton and Southend, handled an increased number of passengers last year despite a dip in holiday-flight traffic.

A total of 221 million passengers passed through UK airports in 2012 - 0.6% up on the 2011 total, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said.

While passenger numbers on charter flights fell nearly 8% last year, scheduled flight numbers rose 1.5%.

But despite the overall increase, last year's total was still 8% below the peak of 240 million reached in 2007.

Heathrow had a record year last year, handling 0.9% more passengers for a total of 70 million.

Numbers were up 1.7% at Gatwick, up 1.1% at Luton and up 0.8% at London City, but Stansted numbers fell 3.2%.
