I know they are working to introduce VHF Satellite Communications but I can't imagine HF is going to cease and VHF Satcom take its place completely very soon.

morning Tom .I hope i find you in good fettle. the chappy writing the article said it was going up on sat.I hope it does,nt go as i,ve spent many a hour down there.Only downside to it Tom is manually inserting the frequencies .ps i thought this retirement lark was a time to relax, put your feet up!!!.since i got this box of tricks time flies by

Morning billko,

I'm keeping well thanks, I trust you are too. You are right, time flies when you have stuff to occupy you. I'm 73 and retired at 65, I just have no idea where the past eight years have gone. I listen to some HF here, on an ICOM IC-PCR1000, so all the frequencies are in memory. I've yet to try out the SBS-3 SDRs on HF.

Regards,

Tom

hi Tom i looked at buying the icom 2500 to go with the sbs-3.The old adage sprang to mind run before you can walk. The sbs was sat in the box in the shack from well
before christmas only when i joined mike and you guys on here did i get it out.I have abit of ham gear for hf. plus the biggest bag of crap i ever bought radioshack 394 Im i allowed a rant? also maybe you remember the eddystone ea12 i had it from the 60s.Now you stated something else off Tom sbs-3 for hf.

Billko,

The Eddystone was my first receiver, followed by the HRO and a Collins (can't remember the model). All surplus of course. Then I took my licence and operated in a number of countries as a ham. Best QTH was Nicosia, Cyprus as 5B4DT, worked over 130 countries from there with a simple G5RV between two telegraph poles. Whilst there I was also privileged to take a small part in the Transequatorial  Propagation experiment on 2 mtrs between Ray Cracknell ZE2JV in Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and Roland Whiting 5B4WR in Cyprus.

I'm hoping to get permission for a G5RV between two telephone poles outside the house here, as the alignment will be right for the Oceanic flights.

hI Tom.Went to nightschool for the R.A.E in the 90s but had to go into the hospital  for a big Op that put pay to that.same as raven going through now. This is what i was referring to in a resent post Tom about the likes of Mike, yourself, smudger, etc.helping newbies out. The ham band is getting a few g0s and g3s not taking kindly to the new breed of operators. In my view Tom the hobby needed new blood to keep it active. The 2 mtrs band in this area is not used very much now most nights T om you can go through the all 2 mtrs and not hear a soul.I enjoy this new hobby  i, ve come across

good to have a rant now an then Billko

Tom a full size or 1/2 g5rv.Alot of the chaps are on windoms now.A.T.U would we be able to match hf into something like flightradar?

                                                                            Billko

Billko,

Full size if they let me do it.

I don't understand your question about Flightradar.

If you're thinking about using a HF antenna (windom) for SHF... (?)

No that does'nt work, you'll have no signal at all on 1090 mHz, better buy a seperate antenna for all frequencies above 30 mHz,
so one for VHF-Air, one for 1090 mHz etc.

hi Guys  Sorry to cause confusion what i meant was it possible to link hf signals through flightradar? For instance say on 11175 picked up transmisson from a aircraft then track it on f/t24 ????????????

                                                                                                   Billko

Yes, if you have his callsign and then only if he is within range of a ground station that subscribes to that service - and has full ADS-B.
