Cleaning staff at municipally owned Manchester Airport walked out on strike today in protest at a vicious attack on their pay and conditions.

Employer outsourcing firm Mitie racked up pre-tax profits of £111.7 million last year but stunned airport workers with plans to force through a £90-a-month pay cut.

Their union Unite says the attack on conditions will leave them struggling to afford even basics for their families - forcing them into the clutches of payday lenders.

The 24-hour strike started at 6am today and pickets are in action at the airport's three terminals.

Unite accused Mitie of "refusing to listen" to concerns over plans to slash workers' paid one-hour lunch break to 30 minutes - a £69.50-a-month cut - and the abolition of a £20 monthly attendance bonus.

Mitie recently took over facilities at my company.

Since they took over I started finding soap in the toilets watered down, followed by no soap at all.

Followed by no toilet paper, followed by no hand towels in the kitchen areas.

Office areas that used to cleaned daily went to not being cleaned at all.

Kitchen areas that used to be kept clean are now dirty.

Unfortunately I work for a large organisation with no real way to voice my complaints.

I don't know what was promised in the contract, but I wish we had the 'old' company back, Mitie are rubbish.
They might satisfy the bottom line on the balance sheet for the benefit of the accountants but I wouldn't touch then with a barge pole.

You get what you pay for, but staff are the most important asset a company has, why take liberties?
Costs are important of course, but without a workforce you have no company.

As an old man I'm still amazed (I know I shouldn't be) that companies will risk loyal long term serving staff revolting for the sake of a few quid (in the context of the overall operation).

Bring back common sense and sensible contracts, and accountability of management.

Rant over : :)

All big companies now look at Profits before loyalty.

Some greedy employers seek larger profits at the expense of loyalty, both of their customers and employees.

Well managed companies increase profilts through customer and employee loyalty.  The John Lewis Partnership for one.
