I thought I should let everyone know about this design.

I followed http://www.balarad.net/ dunsan balards design.

I built it with various things going through my mind mainly it wont work, it can't.  I have built various scanning aerials and tv aerials in the past, I just could not get my head around the science.

I even spoke and e-mailed Dunsan the author and creator of the plans I worked from.  Getting over the language barrier was hard at first, especially trying to say what I meant, or wanted to ask.

Anyway I have built the aerial and I am pleased with the result 250km now whereas before it was 70km.

I will have to try one with better coaxial cable, and brass ferite to join to, should be fun soldering that lot.

A major issue I had when building was inserting the inner conductor to the outer braid without bursting through either the braid or plastic outer casing.  Well use a lighter and heat up the plastic and it is easier to insert and make a clean join.

The other issue was what to do with the ends once it is built.  Answer from Dunsan was leave one end open and unconnected and the other terminate with a satellite connector or tv connector or a connector of your choice.

This is just my experience that I thought I would share with you.

I used a very fine philips screwdriver to first make the passage under the outer cover for the centre wire, i also used coax with a solid core that made insertion easier. Once finished i put it inside a plastic pipe to help rigidity.

My next one will also be with brass ferrule and the centre of rg213, worth spending for the ferrule as i now know it works.

I too am pleased with the results, 225nm max and that was on an rtl dongle using this antenna.

I will use this thread just to gather all info together.

Second attempt with my unknown coax collinear, Balarad design. I had it without the terminal 75 ohm resistor. Signal shown on RTL10890 was on 10's average. I have now attached the terminal resistor and signal has rised to 60's figures. Max 110 nm being indoor on a west facing window.

I think I'll make another one with a good coax and placed outdoors in top of the roof. It works !!

Hello Breitling,

My setup in this moment is the little anttenna of the dongle, coneccted in the outside to a 1 mt. of heigh above the roof, to a one usb active cable of 10 mts.  My recepcion range is max 120nm.  I am sure that you with a collinear desing, can give more¡¡¡.

I change my earlier homebuilt antenna because broke and decrease the range but with these model I was have a max of 190nm.

I am waiting your news for try to make the same collinear desing

cheers

Ok i need an 75Ohm Resistor on Top to connect the Shild and the Main Wire?
My huge Problem is there are many Mountain around me and i cant told how good is my Antenna.  ;D

I life near LOWW / VIE and see Ground Traffic too.

Hello,

Well,  the mountains limit my range to a 60nm to the East, in Argentinian Territory.  To a south and norh I have my max range.  If you have the map I live in Santiago, 12 nm to the south of Scel airport, and the andes limit my look to the east

Cheers
