SCOTS passengers whose flights were delayed after a British Airways jet engine caught fire, causing chaos at Heathrow, will not be compensated.

The airline insisted travellers left stranded after short-haul flights between Scottish airports and London Heathrow were cancelled on Friday would not get anything more than the free food and drink or hotel accommodation they received.

Short-haul services in and out of Heathrow were cancelled after an Oslo-bound BA jet turned back to London following a suspected bird strike that took out an engine and set it ablaze. Nobody was hurt.

About 200 UK flights, mostly belonging to BA, were cancelled following the closure of Heathrow, affecting hundreds of travellers. It meant services north of the Border were disrupted, but they had resumed by the evening.
