A £1M centre teaching people to tackle major offshore disasters has opened its doors in the North East.

For the thousands of people working on rigs and offshore wind turbines, those trained at the Newcastle centre will be their firefighters and rescuers in the event of an emergency.

Officially opened yesterday, the facility is housed in an extension to Newcastle International Airport's fire station and aims to become the UK's hub for the vital fire-fighter training needed in the oil, gas wind and maritime industries.

In the next three years alone it is planned that 18,000 offshore workers will come through the training centre's doors to get to grips with how to respond to and prevent potentially life-threatening disasters.
