Now I've got my external antenna installed, I've been running BaseStation again.  But I have a problem which I can't resolve.

The PC is running Win 7 x64 and BaseStation 184, but the version doesn't make any difference.

When I select any aircraft to open the Aircraft Details window, I'm asked if I want to open or save the xml file.  If I choose Open I see a new window, "View Downloads".  Images attached.

Consequently I can't view the Aircraft Details window.

I've looked everywhere in Win 7 to see if there's a setting to allow the xml files to be used as normal but to no avail.

Has anyone else experienced this and found a solution?

I've not seen this problem.

One small (moot) point, the file I think that displays the Aircraft Details window has a .xsl extension and not .xml - or at least that's how it appears in my user data folder. Basestation.xsl is the file. Maybe that is sending you down the wrong road if you are looking at .xml files.

The 2 .xml files I do have in my user data folder are temp1.xml and temp2.xml which contain the results of the last Display of Aircraft Details session.

What happens if you elect to save the temp.xml file?

Not sure that's any help  ???

Thanks Tim.

The Aircraft Details window is driven by the BaseStation.xsl and BaseStation.css files which format and generate the temp1 and temp2.xml files.

If one deletes the xml files, BaseStation will create and populate new ones with aircraft data from the sqb file.

BaseStation, by default, used IE to display the Aircraft Details window.  Something on my PC is stopping IE from "opening" the xml file, either temp1 or temp2.  I suspect a security setting somewhere but I can't find it.

Check that XSL Stylesheets (.xsl) is still associated with Internet Explorer and double click to change it if not

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Associate a file type or protocol with a program

Good idea.

xss and xsl were associated with Notepad but changing them to IE hasn't solved it.

And rebooted?

FWIW my .css, .xsl and .xml files are associated with Dreamweaver when I look in File Explorer but that has no effect on the files running correctly via Basestation.

I think it's something else.

Thanks for trying to help.

It will be easy when we know how.  But finding the How is the challenge.

Clearly I'm not alone:

Until recently, I could open XML files in IE, which produced a prettified view. Now, if I select an XML file on a local drive - even in my user profile - all I get is a download manager window asking whether I want to open or save the file. Clicking Open adds another entry to the list and another prompt to open or save. Since opening XML files is not a daily occurrence, I can't say what changes have been made since it last worked. It could be that I haven't tried since installing IE10 over the release preview.

Can anyone suggest why my IE10 on W7 refuses to open XML files when IE10RP displayed them without demur?

Tried removing IE11 and installing IE8 but still got the problem!

Having spent many hours removing IE11, installing IE8 and reading numerous posts I've managed to get this solved.  But I'm not 100% sure which action fixed it!

The last thing I did was the following:

The solution is to set XML Editor (by Microsoft Corporation) as the default. When you go to "Choose Default Program" for XML files, it is the one with the Office icon. For me, I had Office 2003 installed, so this translated to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\microsoft shared\OFFICE11\MSOXMLED.EXE".

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie8-windows_7/ie8-wont-open-any-xml-files-navigation-to-the/1c5e1194-c63f-4691-89c1-25ac17a8ed93?page=2

BUT it didn't work.  So I reverted to associating xml again with IE.  And then it worked.  ;D

So, in summary, later versions of IE on Win 7 x64 may be corrupted.  Removing IE and reinstalling isn't straightforward and some files remain and others don't get installed, according to MS activity reports.  And I can't be sure what actually fixed the problem other than the last set of actions.

But it's good to get the Aircraft Details window back.
