Supersonic shock waves are invisible to the naked eye, but photographs using a calcium-K optical filter can overcome this.

Stunning photographs of aircraft breaking the sound barrier have been taken by NASA.

A high-speed photography technique known as schlieren was used to capture the incredible images.

"The images were captured with consumer grade astronomy equipment which can be picked up for around £2,000, meaning anyone should be able to take similar shots if they are willing to make the investment."

Oh, really, just 2K - bargain. Plus you happen to need an aircraft flying at supersonic speed in your area to photograph - who writes this stuff?
