L-3 Unveils ADS-B Solution for Helicopters

Many helicopter owners and operators now have a quick and easy solution to comply with the FAA's mandate to equip their aircraft for ADS-B out. L-3 Aviation Products announced yesterday at Heli-Expo 2016 that it has obtained FAA approval for installation of its Lynx line of ADS-B products in 93 helicopter models. The fixed-wing product has been in use for about a year.

The approval for the one-box system, which includes both ADS-B in traffic and weather information and touchscreen control, fits into the same space on the panel as a standard transponder, said Larry Riddle, vice president of marketing and sales for L-3 Aviation Products (Booth 2411). "L-3's top-of-the-line Lynx NGT-9000 is an all-in-one solution for rotorcraft operators needing to replace their aging transponder while achieving ADS-B compliance." The company also offers remote-mount versions.

NASA Announces Supersonic Passenger Aircraft Project
Lockheed Martin earns contract for commercial supersonic aircraft demonstrator with quiet boom.

Watch out, Aerion. There may be some competition in the development of supersonic passenger airplanes in the not so distant future. NASA announced yesterday that it has awarded a $20 million contract to Lockheed Martin for the primary design of a commercially viable supersonic flight demonstrator aircraft.

Nasa selects Lockheed to help design quieter supersonic passenger jet

Nasa has selected a team led by Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company to develop a preliminary design for a low boom flight demonstration (LBFD) quiet supersonic transport (QueSST) X-plane.

The aircraft is the first in a series of Nasa's ten-year New Aviation Horizons initiative, mentioned in its 2017 fiscal budget.

Under the Basic and Applied Aerospace Research and Technology (BAART) contract at Nasa's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, US, Lockheed will perform the work.

Nasa administrator Charles Bolden said: "Nasa is working hard to make flight greener, safer and quieter, all while developing aircraft that travel faster, and building an aviation system that operates more efficiently.

Honeywell predicts between 4,300 and 4,800 helicopter deliveries made worldwide over next five years

Honeywell has predicted that between 4,300 to 4,800 civilian-use helicopters will be delivered worldwide over the next five years, reducing the volume by nearly 400 helicopters announced in the last five-year forecast.

Shown in the company's 18th annual Turbine-Powered Civil Helicopter Purchase Outlook, the reduction in the helicopter delivery has been attributed to slower global economic growth environment, increased instability in the oil and gas-related markets and other reasons.

According to the survey conducted by Honeywell, the new purchase-plan rates for helicopters are in stable condition, but operators are expected to buy fewer total new models from now to 2020, leading to a more cautious near-term outlook.

While buying a new helicopter, operators are expected to stick to their previous choice of the make and models, mostly subjected to range, cabin size, performance, technology upgrades and brand experience.

Bell Helicopters Debut At Heli-Expo

Heli-Expo, the annual event hosted by Helicopter Association International, opened in Louisville, Kentucky, this week, with about 700 exhibitors and 60 helicopters on display. Two aircraft being shown for the first time are Bell's flight-test vehicles for the 525 Relentless and the 505 Jet Ranger X programs. Bell officials said they have nearly 80 letters of intent for the 525, which first flew last July, and more than 350 interested in the 505. Honeywell officials said at the show they expect slower economic growth over the next five years, with 4,300 to 4,800 helicopter deliveries worldwide, about 400 less than last year's forecast.

Richard Branson today unveiled Virgin Galactic's much anticipated second SpaceShipTwo at a ceremony in Mojave, CA, attended by his family, Virgin Galactic's Founder Future Astronauts, stakeholders and partners. Professor Stephen Hawking named the new vehicle Virgin Spaceship (VSS) Unity via a recorded speech and said, "I would be very proud to fly on this spaceship."

The ceremony featured four generations of Sir Richard's family, from his mother Eve, Richard himself, his son Sam, to his grandchild Eva Deia who celebrated her first birthday by christening the spaceship in the traditional way but with milk in place of champagne. The ceremony also included a video congratulations from Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai emphasizing the importance of space to science and technical education.
