Radarcape Software Release 151121.19.20.30 (November, 2015)

Hello all,

after a while, we are able to release the latest version of software for the Radarcape:
http://wiki.modesbeast.com/Radarcape:Firmware_Versions#Release_151121.19.20.30

This is the first official common release for Debian and Angstrom. From this point on, new Radarcapes will be delivered with Debian operating system. Functionality of Debian and Angstrom based Radarcapes is absolutely identical. There is no urgent need for updating to Debian. For those interested in reading about the Debian upgrade, see Radarcape:DebianSupport http://wiki.modesbeast.com/Radarcape:DebianSupport

New Features:

•   UDP output of port 10003 - 10006 and port 30003: Information available on the TCP accessible ports can now be distributed to multiple clients via UDP protocol in parallel (with reduced resolution of timestamp).
•   Two selectable skins for Planevision and Beast style.
•   Three new levels for access control of the webpages:
o   Very Strict: Each internal website requires being logged-in.
o   Strict: Configuration and the status pages require being logged-in.
o   Public: Just the configuration pages require being logged-in.

•   2D Map:
o   Label for each aircraft icon with Callsign, Flightlevel/Vertical Rate, and Ground Speed.
o   Climbing aircraft are displayed in sky blue, descending aircraft in earth brown, level flight in yellow.
o   The detailed aircraft information table disappears if clicking to an empty area and on time-out.
o   Trails disappear on time-out.
•   New page: Status - System Information
•   Introduction of feature keys for enabling of future SW options (options none available, yet).

Changes and Corrections:

•   Map style changed from Terrain to Montony.
•   Improved web session handling.
•   GPS Improvements:
o   Improved monitoring of GPS module. This may lead to delayed functionality where a proper GPS fix is necessary, e.g. GPS timestamps. Time and PPS must be based on UTC for operation. When the almanach is not yet available, it may require up to 5 minutes until UTC time is available.
o   Support of operation without GPS antenna. Requires manual configuration of the Radarcape location as precise as possible via the web interface.
o   The 'Antenna short' message in the GPS status was fixed.

•   Debian: Support of software update using the maintenance menu.
•   FR24 feeder updated to new version.
•   FPGA: minor bug correction which spoiled GPS time-stamp at 16:16 UTC.

Have fun and enjoy!
Cheers, Günter (dl4mea)

Local airports using planespotters as additional security

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- South Florida airports are using a few extra eyes for security reasons during the holidays.

Plane watching is a hobby to some, but it's now helping authorities keep watch of the tarmac.

Atapattu's hobby is planespotting. Just like trainspotters with trains, planespotters spend hours at airports all over the country, enamored with aviation. Their hobby of watching planes, however, is now evolving to one expanding our airports' overall security plans. "They call it having like a neighborhood watch around people's homes," Atapattu said. "This is kind of an airport watch."

They've gone through background checks, security training and at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, are integrated as "FLL plane watch," where they use their long lenses for their hobby... and the lookout. "A lot of us are out here a lot of weekends," Crips said. "You get a feel for the flow of things and you can recognize things that seem strange."

Around the country, about a dozen airports are now doing this, including Phoenix, Chicago and right here in Miami.

British Airways passengers who fled plane fire before Las Vegas takeoff file lawsuit

Passengers who ran from a British Airways flight that caught fire in September before takeoff in Las Vegas are suing the plane's manufacturer and the maker of the engines.
London-based Stewarts Law said Friday it filed a lawsuit in Chicago against GE Aviation and Boeing Co. on behalf of 65 passengers who were bound for London and say they suffered physically and emotionally.

The Boeing 777-200 was moments from takeoff at McCarran International Airport on Sept. 8 before what would have been a 10-hour journey when its left engine burst into flames sending smoke billowing and passengers fleeing.

Man builds plane using YouTube, will fly it to his own wedding

How does one arrive at a wedding? Car? Carriage? How about homemade airplane?

That's the plan for aviation geek Asmelash Zeferu. After an aborted attempt earlier this year, he is taking to the skies in K-570, his handcrafted light aeroplane.

On November 28 the intrepid Ethiopian will fire his engine at an airstrip near Addis Ababa, and if all goes well, marry his fiance Seble Bekele the moment he lands.

Final C-17 departs Long Beach

Last Boeing C-17 leaves Southern California assembly plant

The last C-17 Globemaster III built at a Southern California Boeing plant soared into history on Sunday with a flyover that marked the end of an era for the region's once-thriving aerospace industry.

The enormous cargo jet was cheered in Long Beach as if roared over the heads of an estimated 1,000 onlookers, many of them Boeing employees, spokesman Felix Sanchez said.

The jet, which can hold more than 80 tons of cargo, will be housed in San Antonio, Texas, until it is delivered to the Qatar Emiri Air Force early next year.

"This is truly the end of an era. It's a sad day, but one that all of the Boeing employees and suppliers who have worked over the years building this great aircraft can be proud of," Nan Bouchard, vice president and C-17 program manager, said in a statement.

The Long Beach facility assembled more than 250 C-17s over two decades but Boeing announced two years ago that it didn't have enough foreign orders to justify keeping the plant open.

With production ending, most of the 25-acre plant will be shuttered by year's end. However, some engineering support for aircraft may continue there for a year or two.

About 2,200 employees are losing their jobs, although many have retired or transferred to other Boeing operations.
