Is there an "explain it to me like I'm five" way of getting a Rasp Pi 2/R820T2 dongle combo using PiAware to feed Flightaware, to also display its data, including mlat fixes, in other programs such as PlanePlotter or Virtual Radar Server?

Anmer

It's relatively easy, just tell PP or VRS where to find the data - IP and port.

I'm away from home for the next week and can't check my PP settings which "points" to the PiAware output.  I'm not sure which port I used.

IanH should be able to explain better.

Some reading of MLAT problems on the VRS website indicated that Piaware is now generating "ext_basestation" format for the MLAT "listening" port. VRS could not understand that format until Andy updated VRS to version 2.20.

Output from "sudo piaware-config -show" was:
mlatResultsFormat {beast,connect,localhost:30104 ext_basestation,listen,30106)

So to make it work in VRS, you need to use port 30005 (ADSB) as AVR/Beast input and port 30106 (MLAT) as Basestation format.
If you merge the two streams, you need to tell VRS which one is MLAT.

PS this is the theory, I do it different so YMMV

Edit:
Particularly since this post says use port 30106:

Which works ok for me and edited notes above

Ian, have a virtual beer on me! It's working perfectly.

The display on VRS is so much better than what Dump1090 offers.

I've now got mlat fixes plotted together with as much information as I could want.

Eat your heart out Planeplotter!

Great.  Thanks IanH.

I knew you'd have the answer.  ;)

The dump1090 display is a bit basic - hence my interest in alternatives.

Took me a few attempts to get the right answer - my setup is a bit different to allow me to run modeSmixer. Had to check out the sources on Flightaware - but it was from some time ago and not stickied so you have to know what you are looking for  :'(

Glad it's working ok.
