Hello all –

Francois' new active 1090 MHz antenna is available in stock in quantities now and 2 webshops are ready to accept orders.

The antenna – we call it "Active Diapason AA" because of its shaped antenna PCB – is specifically designed for difficult and remote receiver setups. When you have a roof or attic antenna and you need to drive a long cable to your receiver and/or PC, the antenna's PC will help overcome the cable loss.

The LNA is pretty low noise and can drive a 30 meters H155 cable, so that the receiver will see the same signal as if it sits directly behind an antenna without LNA.

I do not recommend the antenna to sit immediately in front of a ADS-B USB dongle (i.e. with a short cable only), because the dongle has a pretty high gain preamp stage built-in and with the high gain output of the antenna it may get overloaded and you will not enjoy it. For the "short cable" setup with dongles we still offer the standard "Diapason" 1090 MHz antenna without preamp, but with low loss cable and direct MCX plug.

The "Active Diapason AA" antenna comes with an advanced aluminum clamp and its case has an aluminum socket. It contains a bias tee 5V device that will be powered by a USB port. Other than that its physical dimensions are as the standard antenna. Cables are optional as you would need them.

The antenna is offered exclusively through the two webshops of Andy and Günter.

Andy's webshop is specifically dedicated to antenna sets that include MCX adapters for ADS-B USB dongles.

Günter's webshop offers the "Active Diapason AA" along with his best-in-class Mode-S Beast and Radarcape receivers.

Last month, as an early Christmas present  8), I bought a Active Diapason antenna from jetvision.

Primarily I wanted it as a replacement to the passive F5ANN PCB antenna which accompanied me on many business and holiday trips.
Including to Saudi Arabia (I must have been totally crazy !)
The rigours of travel finally damaged the F5ANN bejond reasonable repair.

At the same time I also had my ModesBeast receiver repaired and wanted a decent antenna for it.

Reception from hotel rooms can be a challenge.
They often combine many factors to reduce the reception - low Level, surrounded by buidings or trees, high electric noise level from WiFi, computers and mobile telephones.
On the other hand they can be close to airports or airport approaches which can overload some receivers.
So a good receiver and antenna are a big help.

Well, I am very impressed with the new antenna.
My observations show that the receiving range and number of aircraft picked up by the active antenna with filtering is greatly increased compared to the internally similar passive antenna.
In addition the flights are tracked more continously with less signal dropouts.

Currently the only downside is the rather thick antenna cable supplied by jetvision.
The passive F5ANN antenna came with a very thin antenna cable which could  easily be pushed into the seals of most hotel room window.
So even when the antenna was outside I could close the window without damaging window or cable.
The new cable is much to thick for that sothat the window has to stay open or the antenna has to stay on the inside.
Both have their disadvantages.
The active antenna also has a shiny stainless steal base. Looks nice but together with the thick cable also makes the antenna much more conspicous.

So I am looking for a thin low loss cable or one of those flat window cables used for satellite TV receivers.

All the best for 2017 !

It would be helpful if you could give more details about your equipment and tests.
I assume you are using a passive antenna and a dongle.

My hotel in Hamburg only allowed views to the south west.
Attached is the summary plot of all airplanes  seen on one Saturday (first seen location only)
This was still with the GNS USB receiver which at peak times was overloaded.

cheap and crapy Dongle with an cheap "old" 1090 filter and an ebay antenna cable with the Slovakian Antenna.
There is nothing special everything is cheap and perfect for travel.

I see to the north.

Finally got the data analysis finished.

This was from my hotel in Merseburg, same 4th Floor room, looking west.

As mentioned in the previous post these are the first seen locations.
The data with the F5ANN spans one week, the data with the Diapason spans two weeks.
