Good Day All,

Just had a bad experience with a purchased (downloaded) antivirus software. Put on three computer all running windows 10 and the performance slowed down to a crawl.

Just using windows defender now and all computers running a treat.

The purpose of this post is really to gather opinions. Is it worth paying up to £70 for some antivirus software or is windows defender just as good?

Grateful some comments.

I'm still on Windows 7 and have AVG Internet Security running on unlimited devices.  No problem.

But shop around.  I paid £19 for a two year subscription renewal, £8.50 a year.  AVG were asking £98.  Same every year, Bit like insurance renewals.

Given a choice of Defender or AVG, I prefer AVG.  I gave up on Norton and McAfee years ago.  But that's just my personal opinion.

If you want a free alternative to Windows Defender, which also consistently outperforms it, then Sophos is a great choice

Thanks for the replies. I will follow up and see where it leads me.

Thank you

Check your AV Settings.  Maybe that's what's affecting Win 10 performance?

Hi

I have been using AVG Free since I first installed AV on my home computer and I have not had a problem until last week. All of a sudden any web site that used https was taking a long time to respond, if it responded at all. It turns out my AVG was updated on 9 July. When I disabled the Online Shield everything was back to normal. My two computers are using Vista, but I suspect this could be a problem for other versions.

Thanks to Bethsalem. I installed "SOPHOS" and it appears to be working well. No difference in performance.

Thanks
