Travellers were left stranded at Manchester airport after an airline collapsed.

Passengers arrived at the terminal to find their flight to Gothenburg cancelled after the Swedish firm, City Airline, filed for bankruptcy.

It operated 11 flights a week from Manchester, and was
popular with business passengers. Two flights had been due to leave Manchester at 9am and 7pm yesterday.

It is understood some passengers turned up for the morning flight before learning it had been cancelled.

The firm, a subsidiary of Skyways Express, said on its website it had been forced to cancel all flights with immediate effect.

It said passengers with flights in the near future should contact their travel agency 'to investigate the possibilities of compensation or re-booking of flights'.

The firm's chief executive Mikael Wangdahl said: "We deeply regret that we have not been able to resolve the situation and that our passengers have been affected."

An airport spokesman said: "We were disappointed to hear about the situation with
City Airline as the Gothenburg route was popular with
passengers looking to access the city.

"We serve several routes across Scandinavia and we will be talking to other airlines about continuing the service."
