The Radarspotting Spring Raffle 2016
(http://www.radarspotting.com/images/Raffle.jpg) (http://www.radarspotting.com/images/Filter.jpg)
We have five sets of FlightAware Pro Sticks (http://radarspotting.com/forum/index.php/topic,5866.msg28806.html#msg28806) and 1090 MHz SMA Filters (http://www.amazon.com/ADS-B-1090MHz-Band-pass-SMA-Filter/dp/B010GBQXK8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1459758061&sr=8-1&keywords=flightaware+filter) as prizes in the Radarspotting Spring Raffle.
The Pro Stick has a built-in amplifier making it a highly efficient ADS-B/UAT receiver. Consequently it has sold out almost everywhere, just days after it was launched.
So if you would like to be the proud owner of a Pro Stick when all around you can only wait, just enter our FREE Raffle and you may be a lucky winner.
The Raffle is open to all Radarspotting members who have at least one previous post. So if you're an existing member, make a post to introduce (http://radarspotting.com/forum/index.php/board,33.0.html) yourself before the Raffle opens on Sunday 10th April 2016.
To enter, post a reply here stating three reasons for sharing data with FlightAware and one suggestion to make it even better.
That's all. Forum Rules apply and any offensive or unsuitable posts will be removed and the member disqualified from the Raffle.
The Raffle will end at 24:00 UTC (or 23:59 for those who like precise timing :) ) on Saturday 30th April and five members will be drawn from a hat. One entry per member and my decision is final.
Good Luck.
To enter the Raffle you must have made at least one previous post. This post doesn't have to be an Introduction, it can be on any valid topic.
Valid entries must include three reasons for sharing data with FlightAware and one suggestion to make it even better.
By all means include more reasons and suggestions.
But entries with less than three reasons and without a suggestion will be declared invalid.
Post you Raffle entries in this thread.
Mike, thanks for organising this Raffle.
I can't believe I'm first to post, but anyways.....
Three reasons for sharing data with FlightAware
1. MLAT capability
2. Easy set up of the software and account
3. Worldwide coverage
One suggestion to make it even better
1. Make MLAT enabling an opt-out rather than an opt-in option

To enter, post a reply here stating three reasons for sharing data with FlightAware and one suggestion to make it even better.
1. It's a hobby, something to do
2. Gives you a sense of contributing to the greater good
3. It's interesting to see what flies by that you never knew about
1. It's getting better all the time, but make things easier to setup and operate
well, why not:
Reasons for sharing data:
1) MLAT and increasing receiver network density
2) we should all know what is up in the sky
3) it is good to share existing receiver data with others
Suggestion:
Make the feeder sw available also for windows.
Here's my entry - good luck to all
Reasons to share
1) It's a very low cost way of getting into the Radar Spotting hobby. With a RaspberryPi and a dongle you can be up and running for a fraction of the cost of the established hardware brands. Utilising PiAware and Dump1090 - both free programs, means it really is a great way to "put a bit back" by sharing your data. It's really easy to set up as well, follow the online instructions and you'll be on-line and sharing in less than an hour, probably 30 mins in reality.
2) The FA offer of an enterprise account if you share is really worthwhile. To get access to all of the historical stuff all for free.
3) The fact that you can get your own Mlat traffic returned to you for display locally is excellent. Its accuracy is better than the established software and there is no need to "fire off a manual Mlat" to see something of interest - the fact you can't do that anyway is irrelevant, as it is simply not necessary
What could be improved?
I think the graphical presentation is a bit basic, the map could be improved and also the plane icons are a bit bland and could be more accurate / better looking. When I click on an aircraft it opens a new tab in my browser with the flight path of that plane with some additional information, that's really useful but it would be nice if a shortened version could "pop up" in the same window as the main display so I don't have to keep swapping tabs. A 'show more info' link could then open up a new tab if required.
Tim
Hello from Dorr, MI.
My three reasons for sharing data with FlightAware are:
1. MLAT capabilities expand usefulness of system.
2. Coverage for all areas in interest to me.
3. Easy to use and setup along with free account.
4. It's fun to tinker with hardware trying to get best coverage for my PiAware.
Suggestion, make enough inventory of new FlightAware stick becasue if I don't win one, I will probably want to buy one sooner rather than later!
Thanks again!
Here is my entry with the reasons.
1. MLAT, like mentioned by all.
2. Great website and stats.
3. Free and the extras for feeders.
Possible improvement.
Would be nice if dump1090 could take a GPS input, as I work on ships it would make life a lot easier for me and would allow me to turn on MLAT while o/b.
Good luck to all.
Regards,
Neal
1.- Another MLAT network.
2.- A steady growing community makes this a site with future projection.
3.- Free additional info for feeders.
What to improve?
- The live GUI, a bit oldish.
- Allowing other MLAT capable receivers to feed raw data for the purpose.
Three good reasons
1. It's cheap, so this should encourage more feeders which is better for everyone (maybe could buy a few for non-hobbyist friends in poor coverage locations?)
2. Can be used to display MLATs for otherwise 'censored' aircraft of interest, which is really annoying in other applications
3. t would appear to that the range of initial detection is a significant improvement
Improvement
If the graphical display is that on flightaware.com then as others say, it's rather basic, so those of us who have used radar displays won't be too keen. I can't work out how to display info labels over all tracks, I'm guessing this must be possible as it's what any user would say... I'm not going to be rolling a mouse over every track to see what it is. I'd like the display to be user-configurable in the way other applications are.
Hi,
Well here are my three reasons for sharing data with FlightAware:
1. Like most of us, the MLAT capability.
2. The possibility to also see what's happening in the sky somewhere else and not only what's going on over my head. ;)
3. It's just fun ;D 8)
And what might be improved:
I think it would be nice to have a better looking/more up-to-date graphical presentation of the map/planes.
QuoteMy three reasons for sharing data with FlightAware are:

2. Coverage for all areas in interest to me.
3. Easy to use and setup along with free account.
4. It's fun to tinker with hardware trying to get best coverage for my PiAware.
I make that 4 reasons not three!! You yanks kill me. ;D
Anyway my three are:
1. MLAT capability
2. Sharing data only enhances everyone's enjoyment of this wonderful hobby (unless you've been duped by Brandao)
3. Another nail in Air Navs coffin which isn't a bad thing.
If I win with these three, the cry for a recount will be heard across Southern England. :P

Three reasons for sharing data with FlightAware
1. Has to be MLAT capability
2. Easy set up of the software and account
3. Sharing of Data plus Equipment like this helps to push the Hobby forward for everyone
One suggestion to make it even better
1. I have to agree with a previous comment "Make MLAT enabling an opt-out rather than an opt-in option" It just seems to be more common sense to have it this way.
My reasons for sharing with FlightAware:
1. Getting MLAT data in return for my feeded data is just awesome. I love to see helicopters and small planes (and an occasional UAV) showing up on my VRS map now :)
2. Their huge database of past and scheduled flights is great. They have lots of things that are not available on other flight tracking websites.
3. Their software works great and is easy to use.
Possible improvement:
- improve graphical quality of the map
1.- Like most of us, the MLAT capability and the study of frames ADS-B
2.- View air traffic for different places.
3.-It is interesting to see the number of aircraft flying
Hi Jim
Please check the entry requirements and update your post.
"Valid entries must include three reasons for sharing data with FlightAware and one suggestion to make it even better."
1) Great website with lots of statistics and powerful search and history.
2) The FA's MLAT return feed: you share with FA, FA share with you.
3) Learning! Can't list how many areas of knowledge you can explore: aviation, electronics, networking, antennas & propagation...
Suggestion:
1) The aircraft icons on the radar screen could be more realistic.
Good luck to everyone! ;)
Three Reasons
1. Improving the Mlat network.
2. See traffic in other places, within a wide network.
3. The FA's return feed.
4. Learning and improving our hobby, look how much technology has aided us so far.
One thing to make it better, make things easier in install for people who do not do computer speak.

Would the accidental burning down of the Air Nav building (wherever that can be proved to be) be considered an improvement too far?
As you can probably tell, I'm not taking this at all seriously.
Three reasons for sharing data:-
1) I feel that others can benefit from the data I collect - after all, I benefit from other people sharing their data. The Enterprise Account is a nice way of saying thank you to sharers.
2) I can get to see details of aircraft that interest me that otherwise I wouldn't know about as they are too far away to pick up
3) Lastly, it means I can track an aircraft on which my one of my family (or friends) are on and so I can set off to the airport to meet them - airlines and airports promise more than they deliver about just where their aircraft are. Departed means "left the gate - not taken off".
As to improvements - that's a bit hard...
I suggest making it a bit easier for seeing what's around a given place? Whilst it's a suggestion that seems to go against the ethos of flight aware (to me that means tracking a particular flight), I do like having a detailed map view underneath the aircraft as that tells me where they are. Being able to see other aircraft heading for the same destination also gives an idea of the likely delays on the approach. Also it's nice to have the system remember where I last was viewing.
Reasons for sharing data with Flightaware:
1) Help to increase coverage over my country/location
2) Those data, I think, is very usefull for future investigation of flight accidents and review of some flight paths/history. So I think those data ate FlightAware could really help in flight's accidents investigations.
3) It's very cool to capture airplanes positions at home with very cheap electronics and almost nothing professional equipaments.
My sugestion:
1) Make a better MAP with more information about airplanes and other informations at realtime.
Aware in 2012 from Radarspotting of website Flightaware:
with its screenful of data to stare,
powered by the versatile Piaware,
supported by awesome Flightaware staff who really care!
Suggestion:
To incorporate the ADSB maximum range and signal level charts in Piaware
happy plane-scanning,
cs
kuala lumpur
Three reasons:
1. A useful task for my Raspberry Pi computer.
2. A small antenna in my window is able to find airplanes very far away.
3. Sometimes I wish I was in Economy on one of those long-distance flights.

1.great service all the time of the crew
2.mlat capability is super and get better wif the Pro Stick!!
3.It is interesting to see the number of aircraft flying on the air and i see and lising to aircraft freqwency.
It is great to share to all and i wil inprove my system al the time!!
i am happy ;) on this forum
Reasons for sharing:
1) "My-ADSB" statistics are great for seeing how you perform against other receivers
2) Free premium Flight Aware membership!
3) Sharing is caring
Ways to make Flight Aware better
1) Develop a rich multi-platform app (like ModesDeco) that could be used for receivers. I believe this would help spur interest since people could easy see just the flights they are tracking.
Here are my three reasons for sharing data with FlightAware:
1. Like most of us, the MLAT capability.
2. The possibility to also see what's happening in the sky somewhere else and not only what's going on over my head. 8)
3. It's just fun

Hi ! I'm on time?
Three reasons:
- Increce MLAT coverage in Latin America
- Enjoy this hobby! :P
- Improve database flying from my area
One suggestion? :-\
- Make a more friendly installation
Greetings from Uruguay, and yeah, my english sucks :-X
Here goes:
1 Increasing the awareness of the impact of aviation
2 Increasing the availability of MLAT
3 Simplicity of construction and setup – a great way to learn about the technology involved
Suggestion:
Collate some of the projects to enhance the DUMP 1090 display into a beginners (idiots) guide.
Ciao!
Reasons for sharing data:
1-MLAT capability makes positions of Mode A/C transponder aircraft known and visible within local coverage area.
2-Coverage outside local receiver coverage area possible with mutual sharing.
3-Use of a Raspberry Pi and receiver makes 24/7 sharing possible without the need to keep computer on, with associated savings in power and computer wear and tear.
Improvement idea - Nicer appearing graphical display with more customization options.
Regards,
Don
Reasons for Sharing Data:
1. Being part of the Flight Data Sharing community opens the gateway to a valuable insight into the global view of air traffic movements in addition to the asset of a vast pool of knowlege from members at all levels of expertise.
2. The published reception figures of other contributors gives a useful comparative assessment of my own rig's performance.
3. Being able to make use of & contribute to MLAT data.
I could go on asthere are numerous reasons but the above were the first ones that came to mind.
Whoops, suddenly realised I wasn't on the forum I thought & clearly I don't have a history of posts here so I guess my entry won't be valid, sorry. ???
With reference to your point 1), you don't happen to work in a marketing dept. do you? ;D ;D
Tim
1 Allows new (or old) enthuasiasts to see aircraft without selling a kidney,
2 With MLat allows sharing to help to see aircraft that does not show normally which makes the hobby more interesting,
3 And helps to become part of a big network which benifits all,
Try and update map.
Regards,
John.
