Title: SBS-3 does'nt switch from USB mode to Network mode
Post by: F5AHD on October 14, 2019, 06:19:16 PM
Hello

I had to reinstall Windows 10 on my PC.

Since this installation I can no longer operate SBS-3 in a network

To switch from USB mode to network mode I proceed as follows:

I connect SBS-3 with USB and start the installation of Basestation.

On SBS-3 the leds "USB OK" and "Active Session"  are on.

I put the IP address (192.168.1.170) in the non-volatile memory settings tab. The "NVRAM Update" LED is on for one second.

I then copy this network address into Hardware Settings.

I remove the USB cable from the PC and plug it into a 2 ampère socket.

I connect the Ethernet cable.

I change the network source in Basestation to "Use the network".

and I restart BaseStation

On SBS-3 the leds "USB OK" and "Active Session" remain off, the menu tab "Buildin-SDR"  in Basestation does not open.

This address is well recognized by the network (ping on 192.168.1.1.170 ok, also visible in "advanced ip Scanner")

Does anyone have any idea what's wrong... ? I don't understand, I've been using SBS-3 in Network mode for years without any problems.

This is so convenient for acars in Planeplotter and AIS in Shippplotter.

Maybe a defect on SBS-3?

Thank you in advance

Can you post a screenshot of your Command window showing the results of the Ping for 192.168.1.170?

What lights show on the SBS-3 when you have the Ethernet cable attached and the USB connected to a DC power supply?

Hello

First of all thank you for the quick answer.

The only LED which is on, is the first one marked power, all other leds are off.

Also see the copy of the ping command

Thank you.

What is the power rating in volts and amps of the DC power supply?

Have you tried a different power supply and Ethernet cable?

Hello

The socket is for max 2.1 A max. and 5V (10,5 W max.)

Okay, let's put this note on standby until i can find a new cable.

As soon as I have made some tests with the new cable, I will give you a feedback.

There's a good chance it's a cable problem.

Hello

As promised I just did several tests, with different power cables and especially different internet cables.

Nothing changed.

Only the 1st led (power) of SBS-3 is on. I have a strong suspicion of  SBS-3 device failure.

The SBS-3 is 8 years old and has been used every day. So a failure cannot be excluded. Seems that TCP is not recognized.

Any other ideas?

I can only use the SBS-3 in "USB" mode for the moment.

Thanks for checking the cable.

I would try resetting the Lantronix Ethernet firmware.

I have sent you an email with the Zip utility and instructions.  The Zip is 5MB.  Please let me know you receive the email OK.

Hello

Yes I received your email and thank you for the attached utility.

I followed your instructions.

There are some messages that i don't understand, but I didn't see an error message.

The situation remains unchanged, only power led is on.

Hello

As requested, I made some screenshots

in the first screenshot you see that port 10001 ist set.

In the second screenshot you see that menu "Buildin-SDR" is missing.

In the third screeshot you see that SBS-3 cannot connect.

Thanks.

Sorry to keep asking questions but the SBS receivers do not have a history of hardware failure.

Is the Ethernet cable conencted to your PC or router?

Post by: F5AHD on October 15, 2019, 08:23:11 PM
Ethernet is connected to the router, not to the PC

I have guests here, so I won't be able to test with SBS connected to the PC until tomorrow.

I will give you a feedback as soon as possible.

Kind regards

André

I would leave the cable connected to your router.

Do you see the SBS-3 connected to your local network in the router Admin?

Hello

I forgot to mention that there is a switch (8 port) between the SBS and the router (Orange livebox).

I don't know if I changed anything about the connections anymore. It may be a possibility to explore further.

As promised I will do some tests tomorrow by plugging the SBS into the router and by-passing the switch.

I will also check if SBS is connected in the livebox management web interface;

Kind regards

André

Hello

It must be said that the network installation here is relatively complex. This network includes 2 PCs with window, 1 PC with linux and a Raspberry PI, a set of cameras with recorder, a NAS and TV connection for replay.

As I am also an amateur radio operator (my callsign is F5AHD), I have 2 radios connected by TCP/IP.

Given the large number of ports used, the use of a switch was essential.

Some of these devices (cameras and recorder in the attic, PC with linux and TV in the living room) are far from the router and are connected by PCL.

With the re-sinstallation of Windows i also had to reinstall 2 cables, I may have made a mistake in the connections.

I just did the test with the internet cable connected directly to the router.

Always the same situation, even after the operation with your LantronixUDP program, only the first led (power) is on.

I think I'll give up and use SBS in "USB" mode. I am pretty sure the SBS device has a failure.

I would like to thank you very much for your patience and help

I've assumed your local network address range is 192.168.1.nnn since typing Ping 192.168.1.170 returned a result.

But have you confirmed this by typing IPconfig in the Command window?

And can you see a device with IP 192.168.1.170 connected to the local network in your router admin?

I still believe an SBS-3 failure is unlikely.

Hello

Perhaps one last action before giving up the search for a solution.

Do you know if there is a dedicated software or utility that allows you to communicate with the SBS ?
Something like Lantronix, but better.

I tried with remote shell or telnet session, but it doesn't work (clearly: it's not Unix). My hope was to re-initialize ethernet on SBS.

In the manual it is clearly stated on page 8 that if USB is used, ethernet is switched off to save power. Perhaps ther is a way to switch Ethernet on over software ?

It would help if you could answer these questions.  I've asked the last one a number of times.

The Lantronix utility has worked everytime I've sent it to an SBS-1eR or SBS-3 user.

Hello

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

So here is the result of IPConfig

Windows-IP-Konfiguration

Drahtlos-LAN-Adapter WLAN:

   Medienstatus. . . . . . . . . . . : Medium getrennt
   Verbindungsspezifisches DNS-Suffix:

Drahtlos-LAN-Adapter LAN-Verbindung* 1:

   Medienstatus. . . . . . . . . . . : Medium getrennt
   Verbindungsspezifisches DNS-Suffix:

Drahtlos-LAN-Adapter LAN-Verbindung* 2:

   Medienstatus. . . . . . . . . . . : Medium getrennt
   Verbindungsspezifisches DNS-Suffix:

Ethernet-Adapter Ethernet:

   Verbindungsspezifisches DNS-Suffix: home
   Verbindungslokale IPv6-Address . : fe80::544d:1ef1:2997:db82%2
   IPv4-Address . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.13
   Subnetzmaske . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

   Standardgateway . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

I admit I don't understand your request.

The only things we can see with ipconfig are the IP addresses of the PC and router ...

In the admin page of the livebox, SBS is not visible ...

Kind regards

André

Thank you.

One further suggestion is for me to remotely connect to your PC and re-run the Lantronix utility with you?  I would like to check for any errors when it is running.

It appears you've configured RemotePC for Always-ON Remote Access.

There's a down arrow to the right.  Does this offer you the option to Provide One-Time Access?

If not, try Disable Now.

OK, I can see the problem.

I was using version 7.6.20.  You are using 7.6.21.  When I upgraded to 7.6.21 the option to Provide One-Time access has disappeared.

Searching the RemotePC website it now says that this feature is only available for Paid accounts.  Sneeky.

Just to update this thread.

I made a remote connect and could see the SBS-3 responding to a Ping on 192.168.1.170.  I ran the Lantronix utility which resets it to the default 192.168.1.170:10001.  The Ping still responded.

But BaseStation couldn't connect to the SBS-3 with the data source set to Use Network and the IP address and port as 192.168.1.170:10001.

DC supply swapped, Ethernet cable confirmed as Straight.  Local firewall turned off.  All rather perplexing.

Andre will arrange to test the SBS-3 on a friend's setup but this may take a few weeks to arrange.  I've never known an SBS Ethernet port to fail.  This could be the first.

Hello Mike

I finally found time to get back into this problem.

On the hardware side there is nothing changed, I use the same DC and Ethernet cables.

On the software side, I decided to uninstall and re-install Basestation. I start Basestation in USB mode, and when I switch to Ethernet mode it is immediately recognized.

The Ethernet card is not defective as we had assumed. I tested both cases:

1 BaseStation and PlanePlotter operate in parallel. In this case PlanePlotter is connected to BaseStation by port 30006

2 Planeplotter works in standAlone? In this case PlanePlotter is connected to BaseStation by port 10001.

The problem is still with the network configuration. Unfortunately, I can no longer reproduce it.

As you took a long time to help me solve this problem, I had to give you this information.

Now that everything is working, this post can be definitively closed.

Greetings and a big thank you for your help and patience
