Controller Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC)
« on: November 02, 2012, 02:27:05 PM »
Hi all
Controller Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) will supplement voice communication between pilots and air traffic controllers, it will increase air traffic management (ATM) capacity by automating routine tasks whilst improving safety.

The LINK 2000+ Programme started in 2001 and is now in the full scale implementation phase governed by the DLS IR (Data Link Services Implementing Rule).

Thanks Alpey.

The video is worth viewing just to see how Eurocontrol wastes the taxpayer's money!

Anyone seen receiver for CPDLC?

Thread resurrection time...

No, I have not encountered a non-commercial receiver.  From what I have reverse-engineered from talking to various users, the [North Atlantic Tracks] CPDLC uses the following broadcast:

  • Uplink from aircraft / ground earth station to Inmarsat-3F4 on dynamically-selected freqs ( we don't really have to worry about this as it is not receivable )
  • Downlink on the AOR-W-5-0 wide beam ( http://www.satbeams.com/footprints?beam=6515 )
  • Not encrypted but I haven't yet found a protocol description

I have a 2 metre dish and an RTL dongle ready to go; first step is to identify the downlink frequencies.  There are three freqs allocated at the top of the 3F4 range for aeronautical control / messaging as distinct from ACARS:

1546.0475   AERO-I GES-002 Southbury - control / messaging
1546.062           AERO-I GES-005 Aussaguel - control / messaging
1536.0925       AERO-I GES-002 Southbury - control / messaging

I thought the Southbury ground earth station had been decommissioned but that seems only to have been for SATCOM ACARS.  Is it still fulfilling that role for CPDLC?  I do not yet know...

You can also use a helical antenna as we did here

http://lesoufflecestmavie.unblog.fr/2012/12/09/echelon-le-pouvoir-secret-documentaire-de-david-korn-brzoza-coproduction-france-2-kuiv-productions/

for Kuiv / TF2 back in 2002

Sequence starts at around 8mins 20 seconds in.......although I suggest you don't set it up
as we did....on a hill overlooking an NSA listening station  :)

Flowchart sketch of CPDLC media selection ( VHF / SATCOM / HF ) based on various FANS articles and documents:

We used Inmarsat 15 west for the purpose of the documentary.....I wonder if the same freqs are duplicated , as on 54 west ?

So does the Aircraft use the 108 - 136 frequency for that?
