Good afternoon,
A slightly unusual query that someone can assist with ?
I have had SBS-1 running / Windows 10 PC this afternoon... I went to update an unknown hex manually and the SBS programme completely and immediately shut down, no error message, no message saying 'saving x aircraft to database' etc. It did this on a couple of occasions.
Never had this before .... Any advice anyone ?
Many thanks,
Ian H.
Hi Ian
What's the PC spec for memory and what size is the BaseStation.sqb file?
Good afternoon Anmer,
SQB file size is 52MB ...
C Drive has 410GB free ...
Its a 64 Bit operating system.
Is that the correct info required ? :)
Ian H
The key information is installed and free memory. What you provided is free disk space.
Can I suggest a small test?
Find the active sqb file, which may be in the Virtual Store. Rename it to BaseStationOld.sqb. Restart BaseStation. This will create a new, empty sqb file. Does BaseStation still crash?
I will give it a go and report back .... Just need a few planes to fly over my location near to Prestwick ...
I havent had anything appear on SBS for an hour or so ...
Earlier, I did try and click on an existing record ... It had the same effect.
I will try in the morning when hopefully there will be some contacts ..
Hello again,
There was some traffic about, so I tried the suggested restart ...
The screen on the left where the radar screen would be was a white screen, nothing showing, nothing on the right hand side ... Then it just switched off completely after a few seconds ...
Ian H
... and just to add to the above ... I tried again with the main SQB file ... It does the exact same ...... Getting a bit worried now
Thanks for the feedback.
In what folder was the sqb file you renamed? And do you start BaseStation using a desktop shortcut?
Don't worry. Fixing the issue should be easy once we know what's causing it. It will be software related, not SBS hardware.
We can continue tomorrow. I'm off to bed!
Morning,
The folder was the Basestation in the VirtualStore.
Yes, I use a desktop shortcut ..
It has been running fine on this PC for about 18 months ...
Thanks Ian
In 15 years I've not come across this before. Can you post a screenshot?
I'm guessing it's possibly a corrupted BaseStation database, install or a bad sector on your harddrive. Or not enough memory. Or something else ???
It's hard to pin this down at this time.
Are all your other apps running OK?
Hello again,
Its difficult to post a screenshot as the SBS doesn't stay open long enough to capture a picture now ....
It was working fine yesterday afternoon, then I noticed the unable to update record with immediate shutting down and now there it just shuts down without opening up if that makes sense ... I haven't changed any settings or anything .... Just changed the name of the existing SQB file.
Many thanks,
Ian H.
Thanks Ian.
When you changed the sqb file name, and then restarted BaseStation, could you see the new sqb file in the folder and were there empty aircraft records on BaseStation where they would have been populated before?
My "best" guess it's a corrupted database.
Thanks for the reply,
There is a 'new' SQB file in the folder but Basestation doesn't stay open long enough to register anything, it switches itself off immediately after the blank screens appear after loading ... The sessions times are there but no aircraft records ...
Ian H.
Thanks Ian
What I would try next is a fresh BaseStation install in a new folder, for example C:\Kinetic (or anywhere of your choosing but not ProgramFiles).
Download the BaseStation_184 CD file:
https://www.kinetic.co.uk/basestationdownloads1.php
When the installation is complete, double click the BaseStation.exe in the new folder. This should launch BaseStation and then follow the Setup. Report back if you have any issues.
Assuming you successfully complete the new BaseStation setup, you should be "running" on a new, empty sqb file. See if you get the shutdown issue.
If not, close BaseStation and replace the new sqb with a copy of the old one from your Virtual Store. Copy it, don't Move it.
Relaunch the new BaseStation once more. Does that close?
I will gave that a go ... Thanks ..
Do I have to rename the one that is already installed ?
Ian H.
It really isnt my weekend .....
I have just tried to re-install and I am getting an error message after clicking the windows installer ... It reads 'Error 1309, error reading from file. It then lists a long link ending in ICOMIC7000RadioIntf.biu. Verify that file exists and that you can access it' It then has three option buttons Abort, Retry or Ignore. I clicked on the ignore and the path changes to AOIR8600RadioIntf.biu .. Clicking ignore changes the file name each time eventually ending up at waypoints and changing the country. Retry does nothing and Abort is what I have done.
Hi Ian
And that's installing from a newly downloaded CD file and installing into a new folder?
Did you unzip the CD file before attempting the install?
Hello again,
Sadly so .... and I put the destination as C:\Kinetic
I did unzip the CD file as well .... :(
Update - Not sure what I did, but I kept trying and it has installed .... I will try the other steps now ...
Ian H.
Possibly a bad sector on the HD?
It sounds like the install couldn't retrieve a file from the extracted CD contents.
Do you have another drive or USB device that you could extract to?
Or maybe first try using Windows' tools to check your HD for errors?

So far, so good .....
I have copied the SQB file across as well as the operator flags and fingers crossed, it all appears to be working again ... It has the facility to update an individual record again which was the initial problem yesterday afternoon which led to the shutdown issue ..
Many thanks for your help and advice Anmer, much appreciated !
Regards,
Ian H.
Sometimes databases are corrupted due to 3rd party programs that use a different version of SQLite3.
To test you can download the most recent version of SQLite3 from SQLite3.org (make a backup first!) and install (copy) the new sqlite3.dll. Use the commandline tool to examine the database. BaseStation works fine with the newest version. The SQLite tools provide a great database troubleshooting solution.
My apologies for the late reply ....
I installed the Basestation in to another file away from the Program Files ... Fired it up and away it went ! No cutting out / switching itself off etc plus I can update individual records that are showing on the screen.
It has been running all afternoon without a problem ... I have switched it off a couple of times and restarted it to see if all OK .. Which (fingers crossed) it is at the moment.
I didn't install the SQLite2 program.
I have the SQB file from before and that it working OK.
Thanks again,
Ian H.
Thanks Ian.
So a fresh install eventually completed and all is good?
I got a bit confused between a couple of your posts but reading again I think I can see where I went off piste.
Thanks Anmer,
Yes, it looks like a fresh install sorted it out .... and looks like (hopefully) my SQB file isn't corrupted either ... I have spent a lot of time updating it since lockdown started, deleting a stack of old records, updating many more with the GAS AD Lite program without Basestation being switched on ...
Ian H.
Good to hear all is now well.
Make sure you make regular backups for these things can get corrupted. Better to lose a days updates than months or more.
Too right !
I regularly back up the SQB file every couple of days or after a session of updating .... As you say, it would be an extreme disappointment to lose weeks of work ...
Thanks again for your help and advice ... Enjoy the rest of the weekend.
