Title: SBS-Populate is re-born and running
Post by: Pipo on February 01, 2021, 01:27:14 PM
Added Note - 9th August 2023.

Please note that the dutchradar.nl database server hasn't been available for at least a year so don't expect SBS-1 Populate to work for remote data lookups.

Hello all members,

- Today - GREAT NEWS -

We from www.dutchradar.nl (https://www.dutchradar.nl/) and the hard work of the owner of www.dutchradar.nl (https://www.dutchradar.nl/) Michel can announce that:

SBS-POPULATE Is back online and running. At this moment there are +/- 450.000 hex-codes inside the database which are accessible by the SBS-populate software.

We are also working in the coming month (February - March) to release the website so users can add new hex-codes. So that the database will be up2date.

We test it with SBSPopulate v 1.64.0.13c and it is working great.

Download link: https://dutchradar.nl/download/sbspopulatedb_1.64.0.13c.zip (https://dutchradar.nl/download/sbspopulatedb_1.64.0.13c.zip)

So everyone can re-use the app to auto populate there basestation.sqb file.

For more info and tips: info@dutchradar.nl (info@dutchradar.nl)

Thanks for letting us know of this development and posting the links.

I have downloaded the 64 bit version of SBSPopulate from the DutchRadar.nl site and can confirm it is working with its database.  I never had the 64 bit version of SBSPopulate so mine was a fresh install.

If you have a 64 bit version already installed, you may need to remove it and download the updated version from DutchRadar.nl.

Whilst this will be a welcome development, I do have some concerns which others may share.

SBSPopulate was developed by the late Gary Jones in association with The Gatwick Aviation Society.

The updated version retains the original version number - 1.64.0.13 - and displays Gatwick Aviation Society.

The Help -> About clearly shows the Copyright belongs to The Gatwick Aviation Society.

Unless the Copyright has passed to DutchRadar.nl or it's been granted a licence to distribute SBSPopulate, I'm reluctant to add a link to the new download as requested.

What i know is that the domain / website was free to register for use, and Michel bought that domain. The plan is in the future that he is going to find a person that can write in .net software to make it free from GAS name and be more linked to Dutchradar.nl, for this moment he is using the old sbspopulate tool to let it work for others.
Title: Re: SBS-Populate is re-born and running
Post by: Anmer on February 01, 2021, 02:29:37 PM
Thanks, I understand.

There may not be an issue but it might be a good idea to check with GAS that this is OK?
Title: Re: SBS-Populate is re-born and running

The 64 bit original GAS file and the downloadable file are identical.

Suggests that someone has reverse engineered the program and set up a server to feed sbspopulate while working on a revised version. Or the source code was provided to allow this. If a sum of money has passed between the interested parties following an agreement, a good outcome.

Otherwise?

[Edit]
QuoteWhat i know is that the domain / website was free to register for use, and Michel bought that domain.

While the website may have been free to register, that does not mean the software from the website was included UNLESS a deal has been agreed with the software copyright holder. Copyright does not lapse on death of author.

My understanding is SBSPopulate has not been updated and earlier versions should work, including 32 bit (I can't test this myself).

I'm told DutchRadar.nl has acquired the original SBSPopulate domain and built an aircraft database to match the original.

So, instead of accessing a GAS database, SBSPopulate now accesses an identical one, albeit operated by DutchRadar.nl.

DutchRadar.nl has "intercepted" the server requests from SBSPopulate.  Innovative and neat.

But that doesn't, in itself, negate the issue of copyright.

Just to query in basic daftness non tekky speak..

Does this mean the SBSPOP i have installed already should work.. if i hit the autopop button the data comes from DutchRadar.nl. and will update any items not listed in my sqb file ??  or thats the theory..

Ta,

If you have an existing 64 bit version (Maybe someone with a 32 bit can test?) it should work as before.  I haven't tested all the features but, as you say, that's the theory.

The database has +/- 450.000 hex-codes so it would populate your sqb if a encodes is not listed. We are looking to keep database up2date with a release of a website that users can add missing hex-code info (like operator, aircraft-type, registration etc).

Thanks chaps,

My single updates are done by ADLite with data from Airframes or rzjets, but if the auto now works on SBSPop then it is indeed good news..

Im running the 64 version on my current install..

My single updates are done by ADLite with data from Airframes or rzjets,

You can do the same using SBSPopulate.  Or use it to lookup the code on the DutchRadar.nl server and Update your sqb file:

Enter hex Code -> GAS Load -> Update

Easier than using ADLite and manually entering the data from Airframes etc.

Ok.. so i had sbspop running as autopop, the update option was set to update from gas..
Buuutttt had 42449C, VQ-BWS    Boeing 747-467 /F B744 LGT - Longtail Aviation blipped up and would not auto pop - worked fine when i run it as a single record.. am i being too keen and expecting too much yet..?   :-\

Auto Populate is working - sometimes, see attached.  But some records are being overlooked.

I tried running ADLite to see if that was working with the new server database.  But it ins't.

As I mentioned earlier, Auto Populate is working for me.  But I can't be sure it's working for all unknowns.

Do you see the window "Populated this A-P Session" window?

Mine now shows three populated aircraft.

Have you set the database path correctly?

And is that the correct path and location for your Basestation.sqb file?

For me the record 406F77 returns an ICAO Operator code of "BAW-B787" from the Dutch server.  Yours shows "BAW789"?

Methinks you have all the recent aircraft codes already populated.  Your data is different to the server.

I have 8 populated this A-P Session, I have checked 4 of those and they have been populated in Basestation Reporter. They have not been populated in my usual style and dont match my logos, so I dont know how useful the program would be to me. I was a big fan of Active Display Pro but I never used Populate in the past.

Same here.  For the ICAO Operator code field I either use the ICAO type code (for silhouettes) or an airline ICAO code for logos.  With a few exceptions.

I never did use Auto Populate in SBSPopulate or AD.

But for updating individual records, SBSPopulate is better than a manual lookup and filling in the details into ADLite to update the sqb file.

This way I have control over the data fields and what goes in them.

I like to keep up to date where possible and yes my codes are different fron the dutch version..  BAW789 for me denotes a 787-900 series etc.

Im thinking single changes are my best option and not autopop..

If members here are willing to help to sent us some ""Export major Fields" so we can update the database with those info. How more we are getting from around the world would be great to make the database grwoing and growing.

To do this (for users new to sbspopulate:

Start sbspopulate (best is to shut down basestation), then select File -> Export Major fields, Then save the txt file with Your Country + Date, then maybe upload it to Dropbox or Google Drive and email me the download url add danny@dutchradar.nl.

We will convert that data to fit inside the database, the more fields we have how nicer the database would be.

And we are working on the ICAO Operator input that it only shows the 3 letter code for the airline.

This assumes the local database has the latest, correct data.  And what do you do when the same hex code has different data from different databases?  How do you spot this and determine which is correct, if any?

The big challenge is maintaining a global, up-to-date database.  GAS knew that, as does FlightAware, FlightRadar24, PlaneFinder, Planebase etc.

Accessing the database and downloading the data is great as long as the data is correct.

Michel is using een tool to find hexcodes with double data and this is filter out to check online what the correct info is. How this is done is in hands of Michel

Here's a good example, one I just picked up on my SBS.

The ICAO Type code is F2TH, not F2EX.

The Type should read Dassault Falcon 2000EX.  EASy is a marketing "add on".

The Operator is Bank of Utah Trustee, as per FAA.

The ICAO Operator should also be F2TH.

The Dutch server holds, in my view, four incorrect data fields.

I'm sure it will improve if the community works together.  But someone has to be the final arbiter.

Slowly we will make improvement on the database and yes with help and input from community. We have also contacted S92Driver if he want to help keep the database up2date, this contact is be twin Steve and Michel (Michel is control of the server). maybe we can ask steve to make the fields correct for the populate.

That data is from PlaneBase - see attached image. They use a non-standard "ICAOTypeCode" field for some types, which of course means it's not an ICAO TypeCode!

Thanks Tim.

I rarely "accept" available data at "face value".  If in doubt I hunt around on official listings, where available, tracking sites, latest photos and, if all else fails, Google.  I often try matching flight IDs/callsigns, if possible.  Then I make a judgement call before updating my personal sqb file.

Estimates of "in service" civilian aircraft range wildly between 25,000 and 40,000.  My sqb file has 60,000 records, including military.  Some of these are no longer flying and I have data going back 16 years.

I've also read there are over 200,000 "general aviation" aircraft in the USA which makes me think the earlier estimates are for "commercial" aircraft.

s92driver's populated sqb file (via Planebase) has 330,000 records!

Whatever the global number of aircraft, keeping a database up-to-date and correct is a major challenge.  I'll just focus on my little corner of the globe.

Whilst I welcome the DutchRadar.nl initiative, here's a good example of the challenge in maintaining a quality database.

The first image is what gets returned from the server, the second my corrections.

When GAS was active, the manufacturer's name preceeded the Type which always used the correct ICAO designation.  I can't say this is true of the Dutch database.

I appreciate errors will always occur but I find too many compared to Airframes.org and usually need to check and make corrections before updating my Basestation.sqb.

Should be B738.

Does DutchRadar.nl need volunteers to reveiw the database?  Especially key fields like this example?

We are looking for these issue at the moment, Why we have called Type B747 instead of Boeing 747, because the Airbus serie is named A320 not Airbus 320. But we are going to change this. Al the other feed back i will sent to Michel to look in to it.

If someone here has any knowledge in html, and server programming, we are looking for people that can help make the sbspopulate server better and better

Perhaps you should adopt the official ICAO designations and not make up your own?

See attached.

I think you need to clean up the database.  If not, it won't get used, no matter what you do to improve SBS-1 Populate.

Here's another example of the database quality.

And the absence of the manufacturer is an on-going issue.

I'm always having to check the data with other sources and correct it before updating the BaseStation.sqb file.

SBS-1 Populate doesn't have a Manufacturer data field and GAS always appended it to the Type, for example:

Bombardier BD-700-2A12 Global 7500

Bombardier BD-700-2A12 Global 7500

I have save the screenshot, and sent it to Michel he is going to correct it.

The SBS-1 Populate server has been returning "Website Retrieval Errors" for the last few days.

Do you know if the server is now permanently off-line?

Mike,
I notice last week the you made a comment in the Chat Box and also in the Active Display thread about SBS Populate being back on.
I had a quick look and followed the links and installed SBS POP back onto my computer apon running everything thing seemed to be working.
it accessed the first hit and showed the details as can be seen by the screen shot i have posted.
This is as far as SBS POP goes, just this one record.
The program seems to be searching as the Bar is moving, but unpopulated aircraft are showing on my SBS and nothing shows in the SBS POP screen only this one Jet 2 record.
Even after shutting down and trying the next day, the same Jet 2 aircraft record populates in SBS POP just like before and everything seems to be doing the same.
Do we know for sure that SBS POP is working 100% or is there an issue with it still.
Cheers Mike for any Info on this Subjuct

I'm hoping someone at DutchRadar.nl reads this and will correct some of the ICAO Type codes?

I can understand data being missing or showing the incorrect aircraft or operator.  But surely all aircraft records should use the correct ICAO Type Code and not fictional ones?

The attached are from the last two days.

G350 should be GLF4
G400 should be GLF4
G450 should be GLF4
G550 should be GLF5
F9LX should be F900

Using the wrong ICAO Type Code can cause issues with logos and silhouettes, as well as being factually incorrect.

Updating the database to conform with the published ICAO Type Designators should a quick and easy fix:

This is caused by using the PlaneBase database which uses these fictional codes. I can't call them ICAO Type Codes because they are not the official codes. I know why the PB team have done this but it would have been much better to use one of the other fields in the SQB file for this purpose and ensure the correct - official ICAO Type Codes are entered in the correct SQB field.

The full list (as far as I am aware) of these inaccurate codes is as follows:

CL61 should be CL60
CL64 should be CL60
CL65 should be CL60
CL85 should be CRJ2
EA55 should be EA50
F2DX should be F2TH
F2EX should be F2TH
F2LX should be F2TH
F2TS should be F2TH
F5EX should be FA50
F9DX should be F900
F9EX should be F900
F9LX should be F900
G100 should be ASTR
G200 should be GALX
G300 should be GLF4
G350 should be GLF4
G400 should be GLF4
G450 should be GLF4
G500 should be GLF5
G550 should be GLF5
G650 should be GLF6
GL6T should be GLEX
H750 should be H25B
H850 should be H25B
H900 should be H25B
KC10 should be DC10

E.&O.E.

As a PlaneBase member, I get these codes in my SQB regularly. I therefore run the following SQB commands at regular intervals to tidy things up. Perhaps the DutchRadar.nl guys might like to run this on their master DB as well  :)

Thanks Tim.

I have no problem with PlaneBase (or any other entity) using whatever it chooses.

But promulgating an "edge case" Type Code implementation to a wider audience is crazy and, in my opinion, dilutes the value of the data and the application.

I really don't understand why DutchRadar.nl doesn't do as you suggest.

...I therefore run the following SQB commands at regular intervals to tidy things up...

This can be automated by using a trigger on the ICAOTypeCode field. Then the database itself immediately corrects the ICAOTypeCode field. I've just entered the trigger below and untill now it doesn't seem to impact the database's performance that much. You can try this if you want to by running the following query to create the trigger (please make a backup of your database first!):

--Trigger: Aircraft.ICAOTypeCodeCorrection

CREATE TRIGGER ICAOTypeCodeCorrection
  AFTER UPDATE OF ICAOTypeCode
  ON Aircraft
BEGIN
  /* Insert trigger body here */
UPDATE Aircraft
SET ICAOTypeCode = 'CL60'
WHERE
ICAOTypeCode LIKE 'CL61'
OR
ICAOTypeCode LIKE 'CL64'
OR
ICAOTypeCode LIKE 'CL65';

UPDATE Aircraft
SET ICAOTypeCode = 'CRJ2'
WHERE
ICAOTypeCode LIKE 'CL85';

UPDATE Aircraft
SET ICAOTypeCode = 'EA50'
WHERE
ICAOTypeCode LIKE 'EA55';

UPDATE Aircraft
SET ICAOTypeCode = 'F2TH'
WHERE
ICAOTypeCode LIKE 'F2DX'
OR
ICAOTypeCode LIKE 'F2EX'
OR
ICAOTypeCode LIKE 'F2LX'
OR
ICAOTypeCode LIKE 'F2TS';

UPDATE Aircraft
SET ICAOTypeCode = 'FA50'
WHERE
ICAOTypeCode LIKE 'F5EX';

UPDATE Aircraft
SET ICAOTypeCode = 'F900'
WHERE
ICAOTypeCode LIKE 'F9DX'
OR
ICAOTypeCode LIKE 'F9EX'
OR
ICAOTypeCode LIKE 'F9LX';

UPDATE Aircraft
SET ICAOTypeCode = 'ASTR'
WHERE
ICAOTypeCode LIKE 'G100';

UPDATE Aircraft
SET ICAOTypeCode = 'GALX'
WHERE
ICAOTypeCode LIKE 'G200';

UPDATE Aircraft
SET ICAOTypeCode = 'GLF4'
WHERE
ICAOTypeCode LIKE 'G300'
OR
ICAOTypeCode LIKE 'G350'
OR
ICAOTypeCode LIKE 'G400'
OR
ICAOTypeCode LIKE 'G450';

UPDATE Aircraft
SET ICAOTypeCode = 'GLF5'
WHERE
ICAOTypeCode LIKE 'G500'
OR
ICAOTypeCode LIKE 'G550';

UPDATE Aircraft
SET ICAOTypeCode = 'GLF6'
WHERE
ICAOTypeCode LIKE 'G650';

UPDATE Aircraft
SET ICAOTypeCode = 'GLEX'
WHERE
ICAOTypeCode LIKE 'GL6T';

UPDATE Aircraft
SET ICAOTypeCode = 'H25B'
WHERE
ICAOTypeCode LIKE 'H750'
OR
ICAOTypeCode LIKE 'H850'
OR
ICAOTypeCode LIKE 'H900';

UPDATE Aircraft
SET ICAOTypeCode = 'DC10'
WHERE
ICAOTypeCode LIKE 'KC10';
END;

Should you wish to remove the trigger you can execute

DROP TRIGGER Aircraft.ICAOTypeCodeCorrection;

After the trigger is made (or deleted) BaseStation Reporter should be restarted otherwise you'll get an error

Hello Everyone..

It was silence from my side about SBS-Populate because i was very busy with other private things.
But now I've got more time to do some updates like the ICAO Type codes.

Do you have more things to be changed?

And who wants to update the database or be one of the administrators?

All records are stored in a MariaDB/MySQL database, so it is possible to create a page where you van add/update a single aircraft.
An export via SBS-Populate is also possible (File -> export major fields) which can be sent to info @ dutchradar.nl

Welcome and thanks for updating us on SBS-1 Populate.

I use it everyday and would welcome the opportunity to"update" records as I find new aircraft or changes.

Can we host a database "edit" data submission page on this forum?

From my usage, there are two things to consuider:

1. Preceeding the Type with the manufacturer name.  For example I have to change "Falcon 7X" to "Dassault Falcon 7X".

2. Only use official ICAO type codes in the ICAO Type field.

"Can we host a database "edit" data submission page on this forum?"

Yes possible i can give the radarspotting.com IP access to the database with also a user account.
Can you create a page for it with my details ?

"1. Preceding the Type with the manufacturer name.  For example I have to change "Falcon 7X" to "Dassault Falcon 7X"."

Best way is to have some guidelines for database to get a default database which everyone can use.

Yes.. agree https://www.icao.int/ for checking the exact code

Whilst I agree, there is a limiting factor - SBS-1 Populate.

SBS-1 Populate has only 8 data fields to update a BaseStation.sqb database.  These fields edit the one shown in the sqb database

Code- > ModeS
Registration -> Registration
Serial Number ->SerialNo
ICAO Type Code -> ICAOTypeCode
Country -> ModeSCountry
Type -> Type
Operator -> Operator
ICAO Operator -> OperatorFlagCode

Although the sqb database has a Manufacturer column, SBS-1 Populate doesn't address this.  And my sqb file which was first populated in 2005, only has 8 records witrh data under Manufacturer.

With the demise of Airframes, there's now an opportunity to "fill the gap" but it requires some development.  To progress this, maybe we can continue this dialogue offline?  If any members can assist please send me a PM.  In the meantime I'm exploring what tools are available for use with the forum software.

I really don't understand what's going on at Dutchradar.nl?  Its data is becoming even more "corrupt".

Over the last week or so I'm seeing the ICAO Operator (OperatorFlagCode) field being populated with invalid data, see attached example.

For the vast majority of Basestation.sqb users, this field is either populated with the operator's ICAO code or the aircraft ICAO Type code.  Not both!

So what gives with this data?

The problem is the databases from other people, they want to use the OperatorFlagCode to display a logo with the exact plane model and operator.
Will empty the database for now to prevent more corrupted data.

Thank you.

My view is you should clearly define the parameters for each of the fields SBS-1 Populate supports.  These parameters should be unambiguous, rational and acceptable to the majority.  You cannot please everyone.

For example:

Code- > ModeS currently assigned to the aircraft
Registration -> Current registration
Serial Number -> Serial number
ICAO Type Code -> The ICAO Type Designator
Country -> Current country of registration
Type -> The manufacturer and model.
Operator -> The current aircraft owner/operator.  This can be tricky as the owner might be a leasing company, in which case the current operator may be more appropriate.
ICAO Operator -> Either the ICAO Operator Code or ICAO Type Designator

For ICAO Type Designator I would use:

https://www.icao.int/publications/doc8643/pages/search.aspx
Title: Re: SBS-Populate is re-born and running
Post by: phmlr on November 24, 2021, 09:51:38 AM
I've got an update page in Dutch for to search and  update single aircraft, can translate it to English and add extra select boxes.

Let say i want to update/add a Registration like F-HBLK or ModeS 39856A.
You can use search to see if it exists in the database or fill in the boxes and send the update.

ModeS and Registration must be inputted manually, but the Type and ICAO type must be selected from a list like the ICAO.int database.
Operator is  manual and Operator ICAO code selected from a list like the ICAO Type code

What you get in SBS-1 Populate from my server is:

Code- > ModeS currently assigned to the aircraft
Registration -> Current registration
Serial Number -> Serial number
ICAO Type Code -> The ICAO Type Designator
Type -> The manufacturer and model.
Operator -> The current aircraft owner/operator.
ICAO Operator -> ICAO Operator Code
ICAO SubOperator -> Not visible in SBSpopulate but it wants it in the request to the server.

Yes i have removed every row, database has now 4265 rows (Only Dutch aircraft).
I'm creating some scripts for different kind of solutions, if everything is working the database will be loaded again with a big amount of data.
Will also share a page where people can search and upload/date single aircraft.

Hi Andy,

If you're interested, I could run in an update to your SQB.  It will not touch your logs and I can ensure any particular fields you might want to protect are also not updated e.g. OperatorFlagCode field if you have manually modified entries.

pm me your email address if you'd like to give it a go.

Thanks for the offer, but that .SQB file is long in the bin.

I used the file that was on my laptop (it was about a year old) and im just updating that as and when required.

The updates are getting less and less now, but would be nice to have GAS (or the new dutch one) back up and running.

i miss active display!!!!!

Hello there, was just wondering if sbs populate is working correctly? reason i ask is mine has not been populating any planes for well over a month now. It was all working fine when it came back alive last year but all of a sudden a few month ago it just stopped updating codes. ive made sure the database is located to the virtual store but as i had not changed anything im sure it wasnt something i had done.

Thanks

Hello there, was just wondering if sbs populate is working correctly?

The application works but the remote server doesn't have any data.  Consequently the app can't populate a local sqb file.

See the earlier post in this thread.

https://radarspotting.com/forum/index.php?topic=12732.msg83862#msg83862

When I checked yesterday there was still no data on the server.

SBS-1 Populate is like a car without fuel!

Title: Re: SBS-Populate is re-born and running

Please Note.

If you're using SBS-1 Populate be aware that if you run Populate, Auto Populate, Re Populate or Flag Populate, it may appear to be "working".  But what you usually see is the data you already have in your local Basestation.sqb file.  Most likely it's not data retrieved from the Dutchradar.nl server's database.  So the app "works" but more often than not there's no data available from the server to update records in your sqb file.

SBS-1 Populate will first attempt to retrieve data from the server but if there's none available it will retrieve it from the sqb file.

To demonstrate this, wait until your receiver picks up a new aircraft.  When it does, make a note of the hex code and select the Single Records tab and enter the code.  Then click "GAS Load".

SBS-1 Populate will try and retrieve the data from the server and will show a message that data has been retrieved.  But more often than not you won't see any data being populated as there's none to retrieve.

There is some data on the server but not much.  All my recent attempts to populate a Single Record have failed.

Perhaps we can get a status update from Dutchradar.nl?

Yes, the database is filled with around 28K of rows but will have some errors/wrong info.
There are multiple things on my to-do list which have priority for now.

For the database i have created an area on my website where you can search and update the database, and yes i like clean html/css code instead of crappy smooth making scripts.
This "website" is still in progress, but you can update the database already.
The updates will go to a sub database to be checked, if everything is correct i need to run a manual script to move it to the main DB.
Later there will be an option for database administrators to send it to the main DB.

Thank you for the update.

To put the 28k rows into perspective, s92driver's Populated SQB file has 470k of aircraft rows.  So SBS-1 Populate is accessing around 6% of available data.

I'm not going to use s92driver's Populated SQB/Planebase, because the DB is not used the correct fields like operator code.. (the error's)
The database will not only usable for Basestation/VRS databases.

The most things on my list are private things and when i got time i can work on the website, when this is completed i will give you the database administrator rights.

28K is not much, but everyone can send updates ;) .

Hi Guys,  i use SBS,  to run with my AERODATA database,  i get alerts via their own 'alert program' ,

i used to use ACTIVE DISPLAY to populate my SBS , which worked great when i was abroad ( US / UAE etc ),

does this program here - do the same ,  what do i do to get it running ?  just run the program file ? - will it loate my SBS - SQB file automatically  ?

thanks for any help ?

SBS-1 Populate can be used to manually update an sqb record or auto-populate.  BUT......

Auto-populate needs a remote database and this is no longer available.  Dutchradar.nl gave up!

I use SBS-1 Populate to update single records, entering the missing data from various sources.

If you're happy to do this, just download the app using the link on the first post in this thread.  You'll have to tell it where your active sqb file is located.

was just wondering if anyone would give me a few pointers, I'm trying to reinstall sbs populate and just can't seem to get it going.

I've downloaded the the program and extracted it to a new folder on the desktop, I run the setup application and it installs but a program compatibility assistant pops up saying it might not of installed correctly. I just click its installed correctly and the program starts. at the bottom it then says error reading ini file 53 and cannot find a file located in the virtual store. I've tried to update the database path to both program files x86 and in the virtual store but it still says same. and if I try to run auto populate it just says AP22 DB read failed.

and after I've Installed it there is also no short cut to run the program so I'm not sure how to restart it after I close it? I dont remember having similar issues with my old laptop. not sure what I'm doing wrong

thanks

From where did you download SBS-1Populate and was it it a 32 or 64 bit version?

Is your desktop a different processor bit speed to your laptop?

I downloaded it from here on the First page, not sure what version it is though. I've got it installed and set the database to the "Basestation" in the virtual store which seems to get it running fine. only thing I've noticed though is there's no short cut still but ive made one myself. up to now it seems to run fine, I left it running last night and it populated over 30 aircraft.

thanks for replying

SBSPopulate - Where is it located on the computer? I downloaded it yesterday and it worked. Closed it down and now can't find it. I tried a re-install but it says SBSPopulate can not be installed it is already installed in another location.

Windows 10 Pro. I've searched in all the "usual' places, Program Files, Program Files (x86), Kinetic Folder, Virtual Store, Users. I just can't find it!

Click the Windows Start icon and scroll down for:

Gatwick Aviation Society

..and then the down arrow to expose:

SBSPopulate

Right Click to Pin to Start or More to Open File Location from where you can create a desktop Shortcut.

Evening all, I need some help please. I have downloaded the 64 bit software, and upon trying to add the path to my sqb file, the folder doesnt show my sqb file in the Basestation folder. Any ideas?

What's the folder path for your Basestation install?  If it's in Program Files(X86), the active sqb file will be in the Virtual Store?

Also check your Explorer View options.  Are Hidden files checked as "Don't Show" and Protected files as "Hide"?

my basestation folder is in C: Tools > Basestation. The sqb file is there, but doesnt show when I follow the database trail.

Sorry, I forgot SBS-1 Populate only shows the database folders, not the files.

So you select the folder in which the sqb file is located.

You can easily confirm by entering a known Code (hex) record and select "Get from SBS DB".

SBS-1 Populate should then retrieve and display the record from the sqb file.

ah, I was trying to put the path to my sqb, but all I had to do was Tools > Basestation, now seems to be working

Yes, one has to also "refresh" the database:

Basestation -> Aircraft -> Refresh DB Data for All

Just to mention that the SBS-1 Populate Auto-populate doesn't work.  It might appear to work but it's returning existing data from the sqb.  It does this by default if the remote server isn't available.

One has to manually complete the relevant fields and select "Update".

im pretty sure I just havent got this working correctly. I cant see a single update to my DB. I am just running populate unknowns, it says 154 updated so far, but every field that showed was just hex and country, so as far as I can see, nothing has been added

Ah, I just run Auto populate, and it said 4BB869 was populated, so I then double clicked on that code on SBS and pressed refresh, and hey presto, it was updated. So its working somewhere lol. Not sure how often I want to do that though. cheers

Thanks for the update.

I just launched Basestation with a new, empty sqb file and then SBS-1 Populate's Auto Populate.  And sure enough it seems to be working again, accessing a remote server and database.

I assume the dutchradar.nl is back online?

Having said that, the data quality hasn't improved!  See attached.

N321SD is a GLF4, s/n 4023 registered to GULFSTREAM LEASING LLC

G350 isn't an ICAO aircraft type.

I suspect my SQB is being used as the database.

However I intend that my next SQB update, at the end of September, will remove the "made up" ICAO codes and replace them with the official version.

Evening folks,

After happily using the re-born version of SBS Populate for the last three years to easily keep my SQB file up to date as I want it to be without issue, the latest Windows Update seems to have ruined all that .... The app will not launch now and I get the following error message - I am not a computer expert but does this mean anything to anyone ?

Interestingly another member mentioned something similar in the Chat box yesterday.  He did a Windows restore to get SBS-1 working again and then suggested his VPN was the culprit.  No corroboration of that yet.

What version of Windows do you use and do you know the update reference?

Morning Anmer,

Thank you for the reply. I am using Windows 10 22H2, I am not sure what the update reference is but it will have been the last one a couple of days ago.

The good news is ... In the cold light of day, I downloaded and reinstalled the program again and fingers crossed ... It is working again !

Did you uninstall SBS-1 Populate before trying a fresh install?

The most recent Windows update is Pending on my PC.  I'll see what gives when I run it  :-\

I've uploaded three versions of SBS-1 Populate:

1.32.0.13 GAS (https://radarspotting.com/forum/index.php?action=tportal;sa=download;dl=item625)

1.64.0.13 GAS (https://radarspotting.com/forum/index.php?action=tportal;sa=download;dl=item624)

1.64.0.13 dutchradar.nl (https://radarspotting.com/forum/index.php?action=tportal;sa=download;dl=item626)

I don't know which version you had installed.  Mine is the dutchradar version.

When do you get the error?  When you load SBS-1 Populate or when you use it?  And how do you launch it?

No joy on those  exactly the same failure message.
This is what i do

1) download wib zipped file
2) extract to a seperate  file
3) Run set up (either as administrator or not)
4) it  pops up showing its starting to install
5) I then get the error I mentioned

Any ideas ?

Hi Kev

Did you uninstall previous version?

This may help:

Found the folders in app data removed them all rebooted and  re-tried , and got the same error
Downloaded  the MS Clean removal tool and  cannot find any  entries for gatwick /GAS / sbs populator

So no joy from that .net url that was  sent

Did you uninstall SBS Populate using Windows "Apps and Features"?  Check if it still shows as an installed app?

Before trying the following, maybe close and restart Windows and try a reinstall again?

If that doesn't work, using File Explorer with Options set to:

Show hidden files, folders and drives - checked
Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) - Unchecked

Navigate to Users -> your login name -> AppData -> Local -> Apps.

Expand each and every subfolder and look for any files referencing SBSPopulate.  There may be more than one such folder.

Copy any of these folders and files to another location, such as a USB or SD stick/card as a backup.  Make a note of the folder name containing these subfolders and files as you may need to retore to that location.

Be careful with the next step and only delete the folder and files referencing SBSPopulate.  Do not delete any folders or files that you haven't copied as a backup.

Please do not attempt the above if you have any concerns and do so at your own risk!

No issues with getting  this in depth mate
Followed instruction backed up files
There was a  few folders in there that mentioned sbs deleted as requested
What was left was empty folders

Re-launched installer package  and same issue.

Looking in the folder there was a  2.0 folder installed and a few other blank foders

Have attatched screen clips

Thanks Kev.

Sorry, my posts always assume basic IT experience/knowledge   ;)

If you've cleared and deleted all the folders that had any SBSPopulate data I've run out of suggestions.

Years ago the late Gary Jones suggested this approach when there was a malformed SBS-1 Populate install.  But I can't find the email which was about 15 years ago!

Sorry, I'm at a loss!

One thing Gary Jones did tell me (and I think it also applies to SBS-1 Populate):

Don't fiddle with the registry, AD has nothing there and it is all controlled by .NET and upsetting .NET is terminal.

it seems like it part installs and errors ....Can see it being an active domain issue.
