Just got back from cruise and whilst in Honolulu was nearly directly below departing aircraft, but my SBS didn't pick any of them up. Could see arrivals in distance and these were recorded. Any suggestions?
Was the location set to Hon ?
Do you know that the aircraft were transmitting positions? I would guess that the majority of commercial aircraft in that location do not.
Did you manually note any registrations?
Sorry for tardiness in replying, but having been away for 2 months there are lots of bits to catch up on.
Yes all was set to Honolulu.
Didn't manage to record registrations as had no binoculars handy. Assumed that Hawaiian Airlines would be sending out signals.
Had similar problem in New York at Cruise Terminal, so assume that ailines in America do not always send out signals.
I thought most commercial aircraft had at least Mode-S these days.
Right now I have three aircraft near Honolulu on PP with full ADS-B; UAL1028, UAL1159 and ANZ9.
Is it possible that they are using TIS-B in Hawaii, and the local aircraft are using that. If you look at Flightradar24 all the aircraft showing with a 5 minute delay in the US are not showing normal HEX codes, only TIS-B codes. Just a thought.
I was in Hawaii 2 years ago and picked up everything. I presume you have the show all tab pressed???
Andy
Said he had the same issue in New York as well though Stu..

Sorry for ignorance, but what are TIS-B codes?

The "hex" codes appear to be meaningless and can't be used to identify the aircraft type etc.
Just looked at FR24 for the US and unlike last time I looked, there are now hundreds of contacts. But most are in orange rather than the yellow shown in Europe.
And the hex codes for most are 7 characters. Are these TIS-B?
I note that registrations are given so there must be some link with the 7 character code.
What receivers are being used to populate the FR24 skies over the US?
Ian
FR24 is now getting an FAA feed.
So they wouldn't appear on an SBS-1/Radarbox, etc?

No. When I get back I'll do some more research.
Thanks Mike.

Flightradar24.com now includes the FAA ASDI (Aircraft Situational Display to Industry) feed. This data is delayed by 5 minutes and the hex code is sprious unless the flight can be linked to one already received from an ADS-B feed.
