A sonic boom at low altitudes is very load indeed. Have heard dozens of them over the years. The loudest was off the East Coast of Virginia aboard the USS America. The crew was doing an airshow for a dependents cruise and we had a pair of F-14's break the barrier a few hundred feet off the water during a high speed pass. Same Tomcats dropped live ordinance some miles from the carrier.
