Title: US NAVY a/c turn up in my feed
Post by: Sketco on February 08, 2026, 03:34:51 PM
For the past few days I've been getting some odd a/c turn up in my VRS lists (see screenshot)
Callsign "bobcat" various Hawks out of Meridian naval air station Mississippi.
My map is set to roughly angelsey to lands end and the options are to hide all A/C not on map.
(ignore the miscode nomenclature, it's for my markup benefit not actually a miscode)

Any thoughts why this is occurring?

Not sure if it could be caused by tropospheric ducting or not. I get ducting here in California all the time. Mainly between Hawaii and my home. Just a thought. Maybe others will chime in.

Is VRS only being fed data from your own receiver?

Thanks Anmer,
I get a feed from mine and adsbhub. Oddly had the same thing again today, this time from Pensecola (see screenshots)
Starngest thing I have seen on VRS in a long while.

Mac,
Thanks Mac,
when it appears, it fluctuates between the "correct" distance and a ficticious local distance (clearly much shorter). I t doesn't plot on my local VRS. I'm thinking maybe the feeder has set up their lat long incorrectly or it's some kind of adsb spoofer on the a/c themselves...strange either way

Addendum to my last. Turns out ADSB spoofing is a thing. Perhaps offers some explanation. Also came across an interesting github project in relation to this.

I guess anything is possible. Those planes are up and flying as I type. Thanks for the spoofing links.
Will try and read them. Lets us all know if you figure anything out. Either way. A strange plane to spoof being a trainer.

Stay safe,

Mac

Maybe discobbect the adsbhub feed next time and see if it disappears?

Thanks Anmer,
I will do. Although typically of course for now it has stopped.
