Glad TSA did their jobs. Wonder how old the round was. Finding live rounds in Southern California is a fairly common thing. After heavy rains old artillery rounds can be found while one is out hiking the hill East of MCAS Miramar. That whole area was a training ground for years. I've found my fair share of rounds out in our local deserts where more ranges were. I've found belts of ammo, hand launched flairs and other ammo related item but I never tried taking them on a plane.  :)

This Marine should have know better. I'm thinking he was from MCB 29 Palms being he was flying out of Palm Springs. Many ranges out there for ground and air assets. I use to have a cabin in the desert just South of their ranges. Sit out at night and watch the sky light up and feel the ground shake.
