Title: RF Splitters
Post by: BigRed on January 02, 2013, 11:32:10 AM
After reading Mike's pers opinion regarding the MicroADSB I noted his reference to RF Splitters.  :D

Now I love experiementing - so I looked at my own setup and thought I could do the same and why not?   :P

At the moment I am basically running two SBS3's one for PP and one for MMS2 and BS, antennas one moonraker and other a standard BS105 both are on amps.

What Ive done and its working is Ive connect both SBS3's to the Moonraker via a very basic RF splitter its messy as Ive had to use a few more plugs then I'd like and will probably have to create or order some descent patch leads hence removing some plugs.

My question as and I noticed there were different types of RF splitters is do I need to consider a better splitter? (as im sold on the idea and can remove a amp and antenna) and is the loss worth it? Id imagine this sort of hotch-potch setup would be creating a bit of loss in signal - I have noticed the blue lights flickering more in the past as I'd always have a steady two lights and now on both it clickers more.

I look forward to advice and guidance  8)

Hi Cam, Happy New Year.

I'm more than happy with my splitter.  The only drawback is the cost at just under GBP £100.

I tried using a BNC T-Piece and one receiver grabbed all the data.

Would a duplexer not work? they are reasonably priced and work both ways, ie 1 to 2 or 2 to 1
Also heftally built as they are for transmit to

Hi Mike and Kered,

Cheers on the advice - which one did you get Mike, theyre might be something similar here and Kered, duplexer?

Mike Im using a standard BNC-T seems to be working!

Duplexers are used on two-way radio systems where there is a difference (usually of at least several MHz) between the tx and rx frequencies. They permit simultaneous transmission and reception using a single aerial i.e. duplex operation (hence the name). They're also used to isolate the receiver from the transmitter on radar systems. I don't think one would work to split a single frequency output from a single aerial to two receiver ports.

OK,

Research thus far, I am now using whats called a '2-way Wilkinson and N-Way Cascaded Power Divider / Combiner' from RFI Comms. With new patch leads etc thus removing several add-on plugs. See pic.

I also have on order the same as Viking9 the 2gig splitter.

But so far it seems to work very well, the difference from using the t-piece is obvious.

Mike,

Cost for Splitter $70 AUS and $30 for three new patch leads

And I got the item from UHF.com.au

Ive used these guys a few times plus they service and install allot of our radios at work and have always been helpful even when they dont stock what Im looking for!

Do bear in mind the one Tom has found is for 75 ohm cable (TV and Sattelite) so a mismatch may give losses plus cables could be awkward as they will be F type

Thanks Chris,

The RFI one seems to be working brilliantly, Im not seeing any loss to both PP and BS.

The Monster 2Gig I think will just be a 'testa'!

My wife is thrilled to see one antenna removed from the roof!!!  :P

This is a good one made by Mini-circuit. I am using this with good results.
