Not much known outside of Ireland but there were quite a few navigation errors made by both sides during WWII resulting in aircraft landing or crashing in the Free State as it was known then. The worst was on the night of the 31May 1941 when two Luftwaffe aircraft bombed the road I lived on, killing 28 and injuring 90. Three hundred houses were damaged or destroyed. Our house was damaged but habitable and luckily we were not injured. Photos of the aftermath at the link below:
