Title: Renewed call for airport to be renamed after Earhart
Post by: mhm on May 28, 2013, 12:00:43 PM
A renewed call has been made to have City of Derry Airport renamed to commemorate the city's historic links to aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart.

Sinn Féin councillor Elisha McCallion brought the proposal before Derry City Council last year but it was rejected by the SDLP and the unionist parties.

Now Colr. McCallion has made a fresh call to have the Council-owned facility renamed following the renewed interest generated as a result of the anniversary this month of Ms Earhart's record-breaking transatlantic flight.

Colr. McCallion said: "The rationale behind last year's proposal was to maximise tourism potential by adding an additional dimension to the marketing of the region while the focus of tour operators is on Derry during to City of Culture 2013.
