Title: So many things and ways of how to.
Post by: LX-LGN on June 28, 2013, 09:36:06 AM
As the title says. There appear so many things and ways to do this so this is how I intend to go, unless you guys advise me otherwise.

I am purchasing a DVB-T USB TV RTL-SDR FM+DAB Radio Tuner Receiver Stick Realtek RTL2832U+R820T (http://www.amazon.co.uk/DVB-T-RTL-SDR-Receiver-Realtek-RTL2832U/dp/B009VBUYA0). IF this is the right one? (note this: Receiving Frequency:
48.25-863.25MHz Tuning Range)

Now if I am right from all the items I have read this is how I think I should proceed.

Now the questions.

Finally, Thanks to everyone that has advised in the past. I hope I can contribute more in time.

:)

If you plan to use adsbScope, there's no need to set the port 30003 parameter in the RTL1090.exe shortcut.  This is only needed for the FR24 feeder and this can be set in adsbScope.

See attached.

Yes, RTL1090 is needed to provide decoded Mode-S data for adsbScope so it must be running.  The DVB-T USB receiver is just collecting the "raw" messages.  adsbScope needs decoded messages.

Thanks Anmer.

Can I do both use adsbScope AND supply data to FR24 (when I am online at home).

That dongle on amazon is ok?  I was a bit concerned at the range it stats in the specs.

I can't confirm the Dongle is OK or not:

"Not all DVB-T receivers can tune to 1090 MHz. Make sure you buy one with either the RTL2832U/E4000 or newer RTL2832U/R820T chip/tuner combinations."

If in doubt, get one from Jetvision.de.

Yes, you can use adsbScope to feed FR24 if you set the server active.

That's the one I bought and it works very well with adsbScope.

If you haven't already done so, have a look at the reviews on that page. There's a surprising number from people who bought the Dongle with the intention of using it solely for ADS-B reception/tracking. I wonder how many are members here.

You can test the dongle freq range with the test function of RTL1090.

If you are going to run RTL1090, why not try globesrtl1090 that works easily with it rather than ADSBscope?

Well Guys the DVB-T dongle turned up and with even the small aerial installed it's giving me an awesome range. I'm located in North London (at work) and I can track planes South as far as (almost) LGW and North as far as Cambridge and Northampton.

Now I have to have a play a bit more with adsbScope to set up a few filters (if that is possible) so when at an airport I can filter out ground traffic, when at work filter out stuff over the clouds and try and work out a few other bits and pieces inc. how to log with rtl1090 and adsbScope.

I want to say a big thank you to all of you have helped with ideas and suggestions.

I decided to go with the Amazon one purely because it was a UK firm, and was delivered quicker. in the end it only worked out £4 more than the ebay version.

I'll feed FR24 from home when I have my laptop on the "net".

Again thanks to all and I'll keep you post or annoyed with questions.  ;)

That's good to read that you are up and running. It's a great little system, isn't it?

I know that adsbScope and Globe S lack some of the refinements of other software, but they are more than adequate and they are free.
I can't help but think that some of the purpose made box manufacturers are beginning to worry about the viability of their business model.
As the saying goes 'Why pay more'?

What do they expect?

AirNav's hardware hasn't been changed since it was first released in 2007 and the software hasn't had an upgrade since 2009.

The RadarGadget ceased a few years ago and I have no idea what's happened to the Aurora?

Maybe the GNS5890 and microADSB can soldier on at a lower price bracket?

Although Kinetic has released new and improved hardware since 2005, Basestation has benefitted from only minor enhancements.  As for the Pucks, it's almost a year since they were first announced and where are they?

Personally, I see the DVB-T as a low cost "starter" which will suit many but could encourage some to upgrade to a better quality device with top-of-the-range software.  But with the two leading suppliers not investing in their software I don't hold out much hope.

I'm sure Chris Taylor will be posting that there are lots of things "in the pipeline", but he's been telling me that since I first spoke to him, many, many years ago.

Reminds me of the music publishing industry.

Thanks for your comments, Mike.

I've had a feeling of late that the hobby isn't in the best of health. I think that many potential newcomers have been put off by the high costs of many of the devices.
I suspect that the current economic climate has also deterred established users from upgrading to the latest hardware.
I am very pleased with my SBS-1 which has given five or six years of sterling service but when it goes the way of all flesh I doubt if I will replace it with a similar device. No doubt I shall miss the software and the flexibility offered in terms of maps, logos etc, but I'm sure I'll learn to live with it.

All the best,

You don't have to miss it as it will work with a simple  DVB-T setup and a few free aplications ;)

The rtl dongles have opened up the hobby to many more enthusiasts who previously could not afford to get involved.

Experience with PlanePlotter shows that there are still a great number of people out there who want to provide data to a network....but of course if that network resricts sharers to only those who can afford high end receivers , it becomes elitist.

The great thing about the dongles is that they can provide raw data , opening up the chance to use more facilities and see more data on screen. It also means that
users can get involved with Mlat.

I agree with Mike , hopefully the dongles as an entry point will lead to some moving on to more expensive receivers , but for the time being you can't blame folk for wanting to get in on the action for as little as possible.

We have no idea how robust the dongles are , however a good number have been operating 24/7 for the last 12 months without a problem. :o

Hi Junglejet,

I used Newsky DVB-T + DAB + FM Dongle and follow the Steps in your site to install RTL1090.

But I got Fatal Error message:

Device: 0, Cannot Open: - 12

Please help.

That error suggests the incorrect USB drivers are installed.

Did you use Zadig or the CD that came with the DVB-T?

I used Zadig. I lock the CD that came with the DVB-T in the bank's vault - LOL.

But in The "Device manager" is show up in "Sound, video and Game controller" instead of USB.

Maybe Windows installed the drivers.

Try using Zadig again to install the correct drivers:

I re-installed that drivers - I solved the problem.

If Windows Update tried to update the Realtek driver - do NOT allow it. It made your DVB-T unrecognisable.
