Mode-S Receivers => Kinetic's SBS-3 => Topic started by: viking9 on February 29, 2012, 10:08:24 AM
I previously commented on the low message rate in PP from the -3 compared to the Beast. I mentioned this to Kinetic Chris and he said he would investigate.
Since installing software update 168 and firmware v 113 the message rate is almost exactly the same.
Thanks Chris.

Thanks Tom.
Any noticeable increase in contacts?
Between the Beast and the SBS-3, yes, about 10% to 12%. It's particularly noticeable at less busy periods. I'd say there is also a slight increase in max range under normal propagation conditions. It's only around 4% but consistent.
Another thing I discovered - with the SBS-1er you had to close PlanePlotter before closing Basestation , otherwise you got a 'socket error' if you restarted Basestation with PlanePlotter open. I have recently closed and restarted Basestation a couple of times (just did it now to confirm) and did not get a socket error.

Using baseststion ver 161 and firmware 517 (with the SBS1-er), there is no longer the need for the vodka patches which means you can stop and start basestaison with planeplotter open without the socket error occurring - just did it now to prove the point. You do need to stop and start PP though to re-trigger the plotting of local plots from the SBS on the PP screen, otherwise you only get shared data.

Thanks for pointing that out Tim. It's also necessary to restart the data flow from the SBS-3 using the stop/start button.

Tom, is the Beast outperforming the SBS-3 for contacts or vice versa?
SBS-3 is outperforming the Beast in my location. Sorry if I didn't make that clear.
