Title: Sending data to FlightAware via PlanePlotter
Post by: satcom on September 25, 2013, 08:38:51 AM
Daniel Baker from FlightAware posted the following on the PP group which might be of interest to forum members....

Hi all,

FlightAware is now accepting and processing ADS-B data that members can choose to share from PlanePlotter & FlightAware is freely redistributing it on the FlightAware.com web site.  Big thanks to Bev for adding a "to FlightAware" share button in PlanePlotter to simplify it.

For those of you sharing to FlightAware, you can link your easily PP sharer ID to your FlightAware account here:

https://flightaware.com/adsb/register

Once you've registered your sharer ID with FlightAware, you'll be able to see live ADS-B data on FlightAware (normally five minutes delayed), receive a free Enterprise account (normally $90/mo), see your data highlighted on the track logs, as well as see statistics on the contribution of different feeders.  We'll be adding a lot more functionality in the weeks & months ahead and would appreciate any additional feedback or ideas.

We've put together some statistics showing the different feeders:

https://flightaware.com/adsb/stats

Feel free to email me any feedback.

Daniel

I found this easy to set up, just a few clicks and it was working.

I've posted my thanks to all on the PP Yahoo! group but would like to do the same here.

Sharing data and receiving some benefit from it is a win-win and I think this is the latest in a line of advances in this area.
Well done Planeplotter/FlightAware.

The SBS1 Client software available through this forum has been around for a while and I share through it and get FR24 Premium in return.
Thanks to Anmer/Piopawlu for this...

Let's not forget Albert and Mil Mode-S. another fantastic resource.

I know there's more, but I'll stop here.

A good effort by all over many years, my thanks to you all.

Cheers,

Keef.

I remember how some of us were castigated on the Kinetic forum many years ago when we complained about MapModeS not being delivered.  We were repeatedly told that no one was interested in sharing data and those that did would get a knock on the door early one morning.

The Flightaware developments, of which PlanePlotter is a small part, illustrates the global appeal of tracking aircraft and the potential commercial opportunities that may accrue.

It's interesting that PlanePlotter has enabled this for Flightware but not for Planefinder, Flightradar or RadarBox24?

You need to update your copy of PP, Mike. The current one has boxes to click for all except Radarbox24.

Thanks Tom.

I hardly ever use PP and I hadn't seen a similar announcement.

Did anyone here ever apply to subscribe to the CAA /NATS feed back in early 2001 ?

As I recall it was going to be a direct feed of air traffic , with 15 minute delay for about a tenner a month........   the events of 9/11 scuppered it before it was ever launched.
Strange how things have developed since then.

The FlightAware offer is pretty generous , giving access to an enormous amount of historic data.
Details of the Enterprise account can be seen here....

I certainly agree with that, it is a good offer.
I've been registered with FA for a few years now but can't afford an ongoing subscription so this is really nice for me.

Cheers,

Keef.

In just a few days the number of PP users sending data to FA has rocketed to nearly 100 .
Good to see the UK is now first in the ranking !  8)

Please keep an eye on the PP yahoo group for announcements from Dan regarding future developments.

Do RB24 have 10,000 feeders ?

How come their map is so empty ?

This is serious - now FR24 declared they have 1,000 Free FR24 receivers to be sent out.

Now, that competition have to get 9,000 to 15,000 feeders to feed their network ( to live up to their claims of the newtork with the most feeders ).

http://forum.flightradar24.com/threads/4914-Help-us-increase-coverage!?p=39148&viewfull=1#post39148

" We now have a new batch of 1000 FR24 receivers and we have also improved and automatized much of our "Free equipment process" which means that we can process more applications in a shorter time.

If you can offer a good antenna location and want to host our free FR24 receiver please apply on http://www.flightradar24.com/free-ads-b-equipment

Our goal is to ship about 200 units per month from October 2013 and about 300 units per month from January 2014! "

I don't think so but that's what's been claimed.

I'm also sending data but the stats only show that I have shared 88 aircraft today, when in fact it should be over 2000 ???  also it is not showing Live next to my name despite passing all the PP network tests.

any thoughts ?

Hi Ian,

Same issues that I am having. It keeps dropping from "live" to "today", and I am only showing around 800 aircraft per day on FlightAware, yet more than 2000 in Basestation. I tried the direct feed from the SBS-3, but that is no good as you cannot then use Basestation. It's either feed FlightAware, or watch Basestation. Why they cannot take a different feed like Planeplotter does, I do not know. Maybe a newer Firmware could fix that issue. All in all, it's been a frustrating experience. I am a SMU for Planeplotter, and all the data works fine, so it seems the problem is likely at the FlightAware end of things.

Thanks Stu

I'm glad it's not just me then. I don't have an SBS-3 so I can't try an alternate way of sharing.

Cheers

At present I'm sharing data with PP and FR24.

Am I able to share data with both FR24 and FlightAware at the same time from my PP and SB1er setup ?

It would appear from the sharing options in PP "Sharing" that you can only choose one or the other.

Pretty certain you can't share to more than one.

Well, it's possible, but not from within PP, I share with FR24 using their own app - http://www.flightradar24.com/software and use PP to share with FlightAware.

I posted the question yesterday about the 'Today/ Live' situation over on Flightaware forum but no reply yet
My Stats did change to Live yesterday evening but again showing as Today despite supposedly feeding data since 8am :(

Ian, try their "live chat". I did this because their website wouldn't allow you to create a flight crew. I chatted online to Support who documented what was wrong and it was fixed in a few days.

Ian, look on the Home Page on the left and you'll see the "Contact" button, press this and then look for "submit on the web". This takes you to the live chat portal.

I spoke to support today and they are aware of the problem regarding data not being received and the Today/Live problem
The developers are looking into it and will hopefully release an update soon
