Title: Hello from Norwich
Post by: dave_b on September 28, 2013, 06:44:53 PM
Hi everyone,

I'm from Norwich, UK - about a mile from EGSH, and have been using a RTL dongle connected to Virtual Radar server since June 2013.  I have a small multimedia PC up in the loft with the dongle and a small ground plane aerial.

I'm still learning lots about virtual radars and ADSB receivers - I currently feed into the flightradar24 website, and I see my radar T-EGSH13 appears sometimes (mostly for the oil rig helicopters).

I used to live not too far from Mildenhall, so I do like to pop down once in a while to see what's going on.  Here's a link to some of my pics from the last visit to Mildenhall and Lakenheath:

Also enjoyed RIAT 2013 this year - here's a few of the pics:

I'm also an amateur radio op.  Look forward to learning more about this hobby, and hope I can contribute!

Thanks,

Dave

Welcome Dave.

Good to see the North Sea helicopters from your feed to FR24.

Thanks all!

I've taken the plunge, and registered planeplotter - now have a 21 day master user trial.  Mlats working well so far :)  sharer lP.

I seem to have messed my outline charts up though - I only get a black background!  If I show chart index, I can see lots of squares for the charts I should have, but nothing shows up.  I'll try copying over a new charts folder tonight to see if that works.

One other thing - I have my RTL dongle plugged into a mini PC in the loft so it would be a bit tricky to view planeplotter on that machine via remote dekstop, it also only has an Atom processor. Copes fine with adsb# and rtl1090 + virtual radar server, but not sure how well it will perform with PP.  I'm currently running PP on a desktop machine which works fine, but is only on in the evening.  Is it possible to run two PP installs and connect one to the other, so the loft machine can be sharing mlat data 24/7 and I can use the much faster desktop machine to connect to it in the evening?

I might be asking a bit too much!

Thanks

Dave

From memory: there is a setting in PP that allows data to be sent to another PC but it only shows local contacts and not the MLATs. If I find the info, I'll update this.

But you might want to try using remote access software even on an Atom. I'm running and AMD  equivalent CPU and that works fine.

A couple of options to try are Teamviewer, TightVNC (free equivalent of RealVNC).

I use VNC as a remote viewer for PP.

Thanks Ian,

I'll give it a try.  As PP was registered on my desktop, I guess I'll need to re-apply with a different code on the 'server' machine?

Thanks,

Dave
