Title: ethernet connection
Post by: boro on September 29, 2013, 09:36:25 PM
Hello

Now then please do not flame me because of my ignorance of the subject but I've not had anything to with networking before but I am always willing to learn.

I've got a SBS3, a patch cable 5e and a USB power supply from Maplins and I am using a Virgin Super Hub. I've read BS reference manual and search this forum and Kinectics for information about setting up a Ethernet connect but alas I've not had any success.

I used the pre-set settings in the Non Volatile Memory settings, 192.168.1.170, but do I change the IP address to my own IP address and Gateway address as well? I did change the data source settings to network but do I also change 127.0.0.1 in hardware settings or leave that as it is or change any port numbers When connected the Ethernet cable had an orange & green light at the connection at the back of the SBS and an orange light on the Hub, I presume they should be green at both ends?

If anyone can point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Peter

Hi Peter

What is your local network address range?

Are you changing the SBS-3 IP address when connected by USB?

Hi Mike

Thanks for replying, my DHCP range is 254 (253 users)

No I've not touched the SBS-3 IP address when connected by USB, I only had a looked at the SBS-3 IP address settings when I connected by Ethernet.

Sorry, what I meant was your local network IP address?

192.168.1.nnn or 192.168.0.nnn or what?

The SBS-3 default IP adddress may not be compatible and needs to be changed.  You can only change the SBS-3 IP address when connected by USB.

Thanks.

There's the issue.  You need to change the SBS-3 IP address to 192.168.0.170 (as a suggestion).  Connect by USB and then change it.  Reconnect the Ethernet cable and see if you can see the SBS-3 on your network using the new IP address.  Can you "ping" it?

ok I changed the SBS-3 IP address to 192.168.0.170. reconnected Ethernet and changed to network but nothing showing. I pinged 192.168.0.170 and got packets sent 4, received 4, lost 0.

The ping result suggests the IP address has been changed OK.

Have you also changed the IP address in Basestation?  On the Network tab under Hardware Settings?

no joy :-(

I am getting an orange light on the back of the hub and a green and orange light on the back of the SBS, should they both be green lights?

Excellent.  Much easier with an SBS-3 than an SBS-1.
