Posted on the Yahoo Planeplotter group:

Completed Win8.1 upgrade, all when smooth and took over 3 hours via a wireless dongle.

Needed to reinstall SBS3 drivers before connecting to BaseStation and working as expected.

PlanePlotter required a another authentication code which was applied for and granted with a message that this installation as already been issued with a code and would be sent to the registered email address. Duly arrived and applied, all restored and working as before.

I always thought PP checked the MAC address of the PC running PP?

This happened a couple of years ago with a previous windows update.

The update changes the fingerprint of your PC , probably giving M$ and the NSA  even more access to your data , consequently new authorisation plus in some cases a new share code is required.

This is not a glitch in PP.
It may also cause problems with drivers and other dual level secured sw.

The last time it happened MS realised there was some sort of "bug"  and promptly issued a new version , which again changed the fingerprint and PP users had to re authenticate , again.

My advice...............unless you really need to upgrade...ie you are not simply upgrading because its there , hang fire a short time to see if there is a further release.

I never upgrade windows  until a few weeks after release , even then I only use the critical ones.

You may also find that this stops Zadig from working with the rtl dongle

As it is  , the sudden influx of user requests for new share codes may cause some delays in
response from me , for which I apologise.

I'm on Win7 for my PC, wife's PC and wife's laptop. But XP for the PC running BaseStation and PP.

Just read a comment on The Register: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/10/17/windows_81_update_what_to_know/

So if I was running Win8 instead of Win7, that would be a 3.5Gb download to update each PC.

How long before someone hacks an ISO download which you can use for any number of PCs?

I updated the PC running PP from Win 8 Pro to Win 8.1 Pro and did not need to do anything to PP - as it should do as 8.1 is just an update. The update went very smoothly with all drivers installed automatically.

I also updated my main PC which is a homebuilt with an AMD 4.2 GHz quad core CPU and had to hunt around the web for drivers, so that took almost twice the time to complete .

I updated my PC to 8.1 on Thursday and for the most part it was okay.

PP - All OK. Did not need to do anything, same sharer code and working fine.
Basestation - All OK
SBS1 Client - All OK
Active Display - All OK
Multi-EM - All OK
NTP - All OK
SDR# - All OK
ModeS Logger 4.1a - Had to un-install/re-install the SQLConnector because it wouldn't play nice.
Zadig driver - Re-installed driver (run as admin) to restore comms to SDR# application. I didn't have to go through hoops with the the unsigned drivers thing.

I know that not all this is relevant to PP, but as Win8.1 is being discussed here I thought it as good a place as any to post.
Please feel free to move elsewhere if deemed appropriate...

Cheers,

Keef.

It's only an update from Win8 - it's an upgrade from anything less.
