Title: Hello from Sunny Doncaster
Post by: DaveGu on June 03, 2014, 12:01:11 PM
Hi Guy's
Thanks for adding me to the forum.
I am a newbie as far as radar spotting is concerned, though I have used PlaneFinder for some time. After looking around for an extra hobby to add to my existing ones of military plane spotting and computers, I decided to give this a go.
All I need to do is buy the equipment that I need (currently bidding on a Kinetic SBS-1e Virtual Aircraft Radar Receiver on E- Bay that  belongs to a member of this site I believe)
Once I have something set up, I'm sure I will be asking many questions

Regards
Dave

Welcome Dave.

The Puck is a good, lower cost alternative to the SBS1.  Or you could make a start with a cheap DVB-T receiver.

QuoteThe Puck is a good, lower cost alternative to the SBS1.

Although used SBS-1 of any variety (Mk1, -1e, -1er) tend to be cheaper than the Puck.

I think the sensitivity of the Puck is better (?) and with retail support from Chris Taylor but the SBS-1e and -1er both have network ports rather than just a USB port.

Choices to be made! And everyone on here will have a different opinion  :D

I wonder how many DVB-T dongles are still in use after the initial enthusiasm? They do work and I use one with a netbook when away from home but they take a bit more setting up.

Thanks for the great welcome guy's
I have just lost out on a used sbs1 on eBay. I am on a limited budget, so am going to start with a dongle while I save for a puck.
As a complete novice and crap at any sort of DIY, I will have to save up for everything I need off the shelf.
I will need advice at a later stage on an external antenna, though as I live at the top of a hill, I'm hoping that I won't need one straight away

Regards
Dave
