Title: Free Data Sharing - No Longer Supported
Post by: Anmer on January 30, 2012, 06:14:23 PM
This option is no longer supported.

Updated 18 September 2012

If you regularly share data using SBS1 Client you can also use the Flightradar24 Premium (http://www.flightradar24.com/premium/) service.

Premium has no adverts or timeout and offers additional map settings.

Register using your SBS1 Client email address.

For those who want to see contacts beyond their local area or overcome a poor location with too few contacts, one option is to share data with other Basestation users.

SBS1 Client is a free addon for Basestation.  If you're interested in sharing data, please read the Quick Guide (http://radarspotting.com/forum/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item40).  If you want to know more, you can download the full instructions from here (http://radarspotting.com/forum/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item49).

To proceed further, please send me a Personal Message (http://radarspotting.com/forum/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=1) together with:

1. Confirmation that you've read the full and understand the instructions.
2. Your email address.
3. Your nearest airport ICAO code
4. Your Lat and Long coordinates in degrees decimal.  Two decimal places will suffice.

I will then send you your login details so you can start sharing data using the software found here (http://radarspotting.com/forum/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=cat89).

Mike

I recall that there was a problem of using this software if you were also sharing data via PlanePlotter.

Was that fixed in an update?

The mlat capability of PlanePlotter made me choose in favour of PP before but if it were possible, I would be happy to do both.

Hi Ian

Yes, the PP issue was fixed.  You can try it and run some tests.

The latest beta works with the SBS-3 though it isn't fully signed off yet though I'm using it here OK.

Hi,

The pdf at http://radarspotting.com/forum/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item6 (http://radarspotting.com/forum/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item6) still says that you must be running Basestaion 159 or earlier if you want to share data with PlanePlotter.

If that's now incorrect it might be worth updating the pdf.

I'm running BS 168 now, could someone confirm that's compatible with the current version of MMS2 and PP?

I hope it is now OK to run BS/MMS with PP, last time I tried I hadn't spotted the PP caveat and quite rightly got a slap on the wrist!

Cheers,

Keef.

May be a dumb question but why would you run a network into a network?
Title: Re: Free Data Sharing
Post by: Keef on May 03, 2012, 08:36:05 PM
No such thing as a dumb question  :)

I use PP for MLAT and BS doesn't give me that option. One day maybe Chris  ;)
To keep my free PP GS/MU status I have to share data with the PP network, which I am happy to do

My main display is BS, and that's unlikely to change as it's my favourite app (PP is a close second!).

I like to see shared data so I want the option to have this in BS and retain the ability to share with PP to keep the free GS/MU status I have for MLATs.

Hope that's sort of clear, if not I'm happy to have another go at explaining.

Cheers,

Keef.

Sorry for the late reply but I've been away for a few days,

The PDF has been updated as too has the SBS1 Client software.  It's been distributed to all current sharers who are running an extended Beta test using the SBS-1 and SBS-3 using various flavours of Basestation including version 168.

I've had no reported issues and hope to update the files available here sometime next week.

As long as sharers follow the instructions, there should be no conflict with PP sharing.

Thanks for the update.

Good to hear it now plays nicely with PP.
When I get a bit of spare time I might have another go with SBS1 Client.

Cheers,

Keef.

Anmer,

Hope you don't mind me asking but have the files been updated?

I re-downloaded the SBS-1 client software again tonight and the timestamps still show as being before my post in May.

I'm just a little cautious having upset the PP sharing community once before! If I try again I'm now more aware of the procedures with regards to sharing PP data and making changes to my system so hopefully I can mitigate any mistakes I make!

But an update on the status of SBS-1 client would give me a bit more confidence.

Cheers,

Keef.

Not sure which "time-stamps" you're referring to?

The latest SBS1 Client software version (which self checks and updates) is:

GUIv0045 BINv0065

Thanks for the info,

I wasn't very clear about the timestamps, sorry about that.
What I was (very vaguely!) referring to was the windows 'Date Modified' data.

I'm revisiting this aspect as well.

Just downloaded the files.

The PDF still says you have to use BS159.

And the sbs1c exe file shows it is GUIv0040 BINv0052.

Ah, so this version updates itself when connected to the server - light bulb goes on.

Since I haven't registered, I can't connect to the server but I have just succeeded in passing data through the SBS1 Client to BaseStation.

I'll read through the process of registering.

Hi,

To avoid confusion might it be a good idea to make the latest version available to download rather than have to download an old version that updates once it's installed?

There may some good technical reason it's done this way, so if there is an explanation would be welcome, for me at least.

Please accept I'm not criticising, just asking :-)

Great forum, great people.

I'll update the download file but the reason is simple.

It saves me updating the download file everytime there's a change (and sometimes there can be many in a short period of time) and new and existing sharers get the updated version automatically.

Unlike AirNav which still ships the RadarBox with three year old, outdated software on a CD.   >:(

Hi,

I know it seems as if I'm going on a bit about this but I've just downloaded the current new_mms.pdf and it still says that you will have problems sharing data with PP with BS versions later than 159.

"Basestation Version 161 outputs "raw data" for PlanePlotter on port 30006, eliminating the need to use either the Vodka dll patch or Ethernetovich. Unfortunately this port includes all MMS2 shared data which will cause problems for other PlanePlotter users. If you want to share data with PlanePlotter and use MMS2, please use Basestation 159 or earlier."

That said as it's been posted that that is no longer the case I'm ready to give it a try...

Cheers,

Keef.

I've updated the software and PDF file which explains how to check that your PP sharing is OK before flicking the switch.

Anmer,

Thanks for the updated files.

I can't see the bit about checking PP sharing is OK before 'flicking the switch' but It's late and I've been up since 5 this morning so might have missed it.

Other than that my only comment is that the tray icon keeps popping up with "MMS2 Notice Session Ration:-( (0.00)".
Looking at the data in the app window so far I'm at RX 10/TX3.6, I've also logged on to the website and my stats are in green and 42%.

Cheers,

Keef.

Title: Re: Free Data Sharing

Sorry, I thought I'd covered the PP test.

Its quite simple.  Make sure you have choosen different colours for local and shared data in PP.

Start PP but turn off sharing.  In SBS1 Client choose a node that will give you shared data beyond your local receiver's range and which you can see in Basestation's map.

Now check PP and if all you can see is your local data and nothing for the Client node, the PP data is good.

I don't have too much faith in the console ratio and always recommend checking usage via the website.
Title: Re: Free Data Sharing
Post by: Keef on August 15, 2012, 11:26:47 PM
Again, thanks!

I changed the shared colour and looked at EGKK which is not far from me but I get no low level traffic from my own receiver.
Sure enough your test proved all is OK.

I've posted on the PP Yahoo! group that I've changed my settings as a precaution, but fingers crossed all will be well.

Is there a way of stopping the console from popping up the up/down stats warning if they are not that reliable?
I will keep an eye on the website stats to make sure I'm behaving  :)

Thanks so much for your help and patience, it is much appreciated.

Cheers,

Keef.

However when I go to my account settings it shows my feed status as:

Radar: N-EGWU1 Status: Offline Last upload: 2012-08-16 12:24:31, see attached picture.

I've RDPd back in to my home PC and verified the SBS1 Client software is uploading data so nit sure why that would be...

Thanks for persevering with me on this!

It was Piotr who fixed it.

Hi again,

I'm really not doing this to increase my post count or to criticise, but I do have another comment...

The PDF says:

"It's recommended that you save the SBS1 Client files in a new folder and run the Client from there"

When I did this I got an error message about ftd2xx.dll being missing.
I've got the ftd2xx.dll in my system32 and Basestation directories, and I think I've properly registered the System32 ftd2xx.dll (but maybe not?).
Putting the SBS1 Client files in the same directory as Basestation (with its own ftd2xx.dll of course) and running it from there resolved the issue.

Thanks for all the help to get me this far.

Cheers,

Keef.

Title: Re: Free Data Sharing
Post by: Anmer on August 17, 2012, 07:17:36 AM
I run SBS1 Client from a directory of just five files (and have many such directories for earlier versions and testing):

libcurl.dll
sbs1c.exe
sbs1c.ini
sbs1upd.exe
sbs1xxx.exe

Not that this means there isn't an issue, but I don't recall anyone else reporting this issue.

What version of Windows are you running and is Basestation installed in a default location?
Title: Re: Free Data Sharing
Post by: Keef on August 17, 2012, 12:20:22 PM
Hiya

I'm on Win 7 Pro 64 bit and have Basestation installed in:

C:\Virtual Radar\Basestation

I initially tried running SBS1 Client running from a new folder:

C:\Virtual Radar\SBS_Client

but when I got the error message I just copied the files into the main Basestation directory and all was then well.

Cheers,

Keef.

Title: Re: Free Data Sharing
Post by: Keef on August 18, 2012, 10:15:14 PM
Hi again,

I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in the FD section, so apologies if it's in the wrong place.

I might be doing something wrong but I think there is a discrepancy between the new_mms.pdf instructions and actual operation.

The pdf says:

"If an add-on uses port 30003 data and you're running the patched BaseStation, it must use port 49003 instead if No PP Feed is selected. If PP Feed Enabled is selected, port 30003 is available to up to 10 concurrent applications.
The FD7.dat file for Flight Display 7.8 can be edited (line 58) and the Virtual Radar Server add-on allows the port to be selected under Options."

I have the PP Feed Enabled radio button selected and Virtual Radar Server connects OK on port 30003, however Flight Display wouldn't connect using the same port (regardless of whether VRS was running or not).

When I say it wouldn't connect what was happening was FD would run/start OK but always say 'Waiting for Data' when I selected an aircraft in BaseStation.

I edited the FD7.dat file to use port 49003 and FD started communicating again.
As I read it with 'PP Feed Enabled' I should have been able to leave FD7 at its default (30003) port, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I was originally running FD 7.92 and upgraded to 7.93, but neither worked on the default port of 30003, so maybe there is some difference between 7.8 and 7.9?
I wasn't able to test with FD 7.8 as I can't find a local copy of the installation exe.

Attached screenshot shows my settings for SBS1 Client.

All is working well here so I'm happy. I'm also grateful for all the effort that goes in to providing add-ons to support the hobby we enjoy  :)

Cheers,

Keef.

Thanks Keef

I have just tested Flight Display running with patched and unpatched versions of Basestation.

Using an unpatched version of Basestation, Flight Display works correctly using port 30003.

Closing FD and Basestation, I then started a patched version of Basestation having selected "No PP Feed" in SBS1 Client.  I then launched FD which displayed an error "No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it 127.0.0.1:30003".  I closed FD and edited the FD7.dat file to change the port to 49003.  Relaunched FD and it worked as expected.

I then closed FD and Basestation and stopped SBS Client.  I selected "PP Feed Enabled" and restarted SBS1 Client and launched a patched version of Basestation.  I edited the FD7.dat to use port 30003 and launched FD.  On selecting an aircraft, FD just showed "Waiting for Data".

Closed FD and changed back to port 49003 and relaunched FD and it worked.

I will have to contact Piotr as it looks like the original conditions are no longer valid which may have occured when he updated SBS1 Client to handle the SBS-3 and the later versions of Basestation.

Thanks for finding this.  I'll post and update as soon as I hear back from Piotr.

The recent banner headline about new FR24 feeding software makes me wonder how it fits in with MMS.

Seems like I can feed direct to FR24 or via MMS - is that correct?

Since MMS gives me info on BaseStation, that would be my preferred option.

Just checking my understanding.  ???

Hi Ian

Those with receivers can share data with Flightradar24.com directly using the new feeder software, via MMS2 (SBS1 Client) or indirectly via Planeplotter.

The preferred solution is the first two options as the feeder can access the Premium account:

http://www.flightradar24.com/premium/

Those who want to shared traffic with Basestation should use MMS2 (SBS1 Client).

It seems to me that recently I'm getting the message "MMS2 Error - Could not connect to the MMS server" more and more often.

I don't know of a log file I can look at to back this up, but I do seem to be getting the pop up message quite a lot.
Is there a way to enable some logging so I can see what my connection stats are over a period of time?

My user ID is 126 and I'm on GUIv0046 and BINv0075 if that helps...

Anyone know if there is a problem?

Please don't think I'm complaining, just curious :)

I do not think the problem is at our end. I too am curious.

The data sharing offered here is free.  It's not a commercial service and no one is obliged to use it.  Nor is it operated by Radarspotting.

I have already posted that I have reported this to Piotr.  That's as much as I can do.

Anmer,

I understand it's provided free, and I've already expressed my thanks to both yourself and Piotr.

My complaint was about the lack of response, there is no way I can contact Piotr other than through this forum.
A Yes/No/Working On It type of response doesn't seem to me to particularly onerous and would allow me to make a decision...

Thanks to all for offering the services, I guess I've been a bit out of order so I'll say 'Sorry'.

Best Regards.

I emailed Piotr again last evening and this is his reposnse:

"There have been no changes to that server in more than a year. Problems may be caused by someone with very slow Internet connection that keep disconnecting others. I will try to find out what is happening.

I went through the logs, nothing useful, but I changed one bit in code and we will see if it makes any difference. It's still running in debug mode so when it crashes I will have a backtrace."

My first reaction to the comments posted about customer service and RadarBox comparisons was to close down the data sharing.  It has always been a free service for the hobby community offered "as is".

If sharers expect commercial grade support, I suggest they look elsewhere as I for one don't have the time or patience to handle these complaints.

So I downloaded the SBS1 client, and read the pdf.

I launch the client first then click on start.
Next, I launch BS, where it hangs forever. It seems, to me at least, as if the SBS1 client is getting data, but BS remains in "Not Connected" status.
I'm using the exact ip address and ports shown on BS.
Is this correct?

Yes.

Please see Pages 13 and 14 of the PDF User Guide.

If the SBS-1/3 has port 10001, you need to allocate a different port for BaseStation in SBS1 Client, say 10003, as shown in Fig. 13.

Then set this in BaseStation, see Fig. 16.

I can't see the whole error message there but it looks like SBS1 Client is successfully connecting to your SBS-1/3.

This is the simplified setup and start sequence:

SBS-1 Client can connect to the SBS-1/3 via USB or Ethernet (where the SBS can support Ethernet).

BaseStation connects to SBS1 Client using "Network", using either local host or actual IP address of device running SBS-1 Client and the port number allocated in SBS-1 Client.

You're right about the sbs1c. But what about BS? Says not connected?

I'll drop the matter for now. Spending too much time on these things and neglecting others! :)

Thanks for the effort in troubleshooting my install.

Here.

Thanks.

Is 192.168.1.8 the local IP address of your PC running SBS1 Client?

From your other screen captures, it looks like your local IP address range is 10.0.0.nnn?

The User Guide, page 14:

BaseStation Hardware Settings

Make sure you set the Data Source to Use Network. The IP address can either be the actual PC address running SBS1 Client (192.168.1.8 in this example) or 127.0.0.1 if it's the same PC on which BaseStation is running. Use the same port number as used in the SBS1 Client, in this example 10003.

Well, this is where things get muddied for me.

When I launch Windows7 on my virtual machine, run a command line with ipconfig, I get under Ethernet adapter; 10.0.0.16.

However, on the Mac side, when I open preferences, network and click on my wifi connection, I get an IP address of 10.0.0.2.

Back to the virtual machine, when I click on network adapter, I've chosen the "Bridged (Autodetect)" option whereas of last night I was using NAT. This temporarily disconnected my sbs3 but I disconnected the power from the sbs3 and when it restarted, the sbs3 was fine again.

I did this because I was messing with VRS in an attempt to get it to work with the Internet address.

My sbs3 is connected directly via Ethernet to my router.
Thing is that, when I open the acces page of the router, I don't explicitly see the sbs3 by name there either under wifi or Ethernet connection.

There is, though, a device listed under "UNKNOWN" with a wifi connection and when I click it to see the IP address, it shows  10.0.0.11.

Under offline devices connected via Ethernet, I see Gilberto-PC, which is the name I've given the Mac running Windows7 in the virtual machine.
This ones has an ip of 10.0.0.16.

Hope this helps.

Mind you, as it stands right at this moment, BS, PP and VRS works albeit with the caveat that I still can't get VRS to work outside local or network.
Title: Re: Free Data Sharing
Post by: gcopter1 on April 26, 2016, 06:38:10 PM
Ok, it is working.

But, BS shows not connected although the session active and ethernet lights are on.

I know sbs1c is working because I went to the webpage and see my alias there and it is painting targets.

Is the SBS3 supposed to be in the not connected status?

The browser is an "extra".

The main benefit of SBS1 Client is to have shared data on BaseStation.

The best option if for me to do a remote connection when you're around at a mutually convenient time so we can run through this together.

This morning I went to open the sbs1c client as normal at it gave me the option of updating
the MMS2 software, I clicked YES, it ask whether to run the program which I did, now I can't get the client to work at all? Has anyone else had similar problems this morning?

Thanks

I'm not aware of any recent updates to SBS Client.  The version I have here is

SBS1C Version: 0.0.0.46
SBS1XXX Version: 0.0.0.75

And this runs OK.

Your screen capture shows a different version.

Please check you're running the latest version or maybe you have an older one and started that in error?

I'm sorry that wasn't meant as a dig at anyone, I'm always more then grateful for the help you give me along with piotr with the client, I like yourself provide information with my aviation blogs and images etc.... which is time consuming, so I understand that, so YES the free service has and always will be appreciated by me.

I think the problem being is that you think others might or should know as much as yourself, and be as knowledgeable with SBS matters, which I certainly don't, and that's why I posted the question,
yes I shouldn't have posted on both forums but I honestly wasn't sure if it was an FR24 or Client problem.

Without people like yourself I'm sure many people would struggle with their sometimes fickle SBS's.

Thanks again

The radar ID is now meaningless.  There have been many posts on the FR24 forum about this.

If you want to see your radar ID on the FR24 website or app, it's like looking for a needle in a haystack.  Sometimes there's no needle.

As long as your account shows Online and you have the Business account, that's what really matters.
