Title: PlanePlotter Version 6.4.2.4 Released
Post by: Anmer on September 04, 2014, 03:32:09 PM
From Bev at COAA:

Hi,

PlanePlotter version 6.4.2.4 is now available for download following the link on the PlanePlotter web site.

http://www.planeplotter.com#download

---Usual boilerplate---

Updates are free to registered users.

You may need to exercise your browser Refresh function to force it to show you the new version of the PlanePlotter web page. If you post a message saying that the web site is still pointing to an earlier version, you pay a forfeit !

You can install the new version over the old one but you *must* close/exit PlanePlotter before installing the new one. Your settings will be preserved. If you post a message saying that the installer is unable to replace planeplotter.exe, it means that you did not close PlanePlotter first and you pay a forfeit !

If you have a version-specific firewall (eg Zone Alarm), you may have to reassur! e it that the new version is permitted to access the Internet.

If you have Nortons security, it will issue a message that sounds alarming but is really just their unhelpful way of saying that the file is news to them.

-----------

New features in no particular order:

New in version 6.4.2.2

Modification to handle a change in the Airframes.org lookup (but see 6.4.2.3).

The setting of the 'down only' share button mode is now correctly preserved.  This may resolve the problem where some users found that despite the share button showing "up and down" after a restart, it was only downloading.

Various other small changes.

New in version 6.4.2.3

Modification to handle a change in the Airframes.org lookup when the lookup was triggered from the "a" window.

In the server script Gr! ound Stations for a manual Mlat are selected within a radius or 90 nm unless that yields less than 5 GS in which case it increases to 150 nm.

New in version 6.4.2.4

For the special case of using an SBS3 via an IP address but with raw data unchecked, it no longer restarts processing every five minutes.  This will fix the problem whereby it was impossible to research sites for Beamfinder.

In the server script Ground Stations for a manual Mlat are selected within a radius or 90 nm unless that yields less than 5 GS in which case it increases to 175 nm.

The boundary for the acceptance area of fixes by an SMU has been expanded by 30 nm.  Prior to this change, a significant number of fixes were being rejected as being "outside of the box".

The optional contrail colours will now show the correct altitude history rather than being colour coded only by the current aircraft altitude.

"Options..Chart..GPX overlay! ..Select GPX files to plot" gives you the option to select one or more of the GPX Overlay files found in the chart directory.

"Options..Chart..Outline..Select Outline files to plot" gives you the option to select one or more of the OUT files found in the current chart directory.

A new checkbox in View..Aircraft list display options..ModeA/C..Filter Mode-A squawks allows you to turn off all squawks that are also valid Mode-C squawks. This will lose a quarter of the valid Mode-A squawks but it will remove the possibility that Mode-C altitudes will be shown as Mode-A squawks.

If a manual Mlat fails, a second attempt is now made immediately.  In some areas this has been found to increase the chance of success.

Regards

Bev

Doesn't work for me!

Well ok it plots the aircraft but on a white screen - background maps or charts are not showing.

Reinstalled 6.4.2.3 and that works as expected. Back to 6.4.2.4 and same problem.

Showing two home locations suggests something is wrong  :'(

HELP!

Running on Windows XP - if more info needed can supply.

Its showing two maps one on another Ian....looks like a graphics problem , nowt to do with PP.

Suggest you close the machine down completely and then restart  making sure that
as everything loads up , your graphics are installing OK.

I'm seeing something similar so the "nowt to do with PP" I'm afraid is an incorrect statement.

In my case I have a saved chart of half of the UK, and when I switch to it there's a darned great big white rectangle that is now displaying when before the map was complete. In addition aircraft in that white section when the screen opens do not appear to move or time out but new contacts both local and shared do move, so there is definitely something wrong with PP.

And I too have two home locations showing.

It's OK in outline view though.

Looking for 6.4.2.4a please  ;D

Just tried restarting PP 6.4.2.4 and same problem (WinXP which is going to be my new live system).

Also tried it on the current live PP running on Win7 - same problem and it reverts back to normal on re-installing 6.4.2.3.

Both are running as VMs but nothing has changed from a working system.

Re-downloaded PP file from COAA and checksums agree (MD5: f0b6f13cb33b2e8379e9d117388a34b6

I'll try a temporary fresh install on another VM, and also on my netbook.

I would try loading the charts from the 'File/Open chart' menu and then re-assigning to the Quick chart buttons.

New install of PP on another XP VM. All looks ok so my calibrated charts are not the problem. Assigned to Quick Charts and still ok.

I have BS outlines on my charts so just went and modified the registry so they show as per these instructions: http://planeplotter.pbworks.com/w/page/17117300/Customising%20the%20display#CanIaddvectoroutlinesontopofachart

Changing "OutlineOnChart" to 1 and restarting PC and the problem occurs. Try PP6.4.2.3 with this setting and all is ok.

Changing "OutlineOnChart" back to 0 and restarting PC and the problem with PP6.4.2.4 has gone.

I'm sticking with 6.4.2.3 no matter how many times I get nagged to update.

It's not a PP bug - it's a registry mod which comes with a warning!

I'm sorry Tom, but the mod to the registry has worked fine for ages - it stopped working with the latest version of PP = a bug in anyone's book.

I can't access the PP Yahoo Groups at this time.

Are our two members the only ones reporting this issue?

No, one other and also there seems to be a possibly related issue with the number of outline (.out) files you have as that, it seems, is also upsetting PP. Bev says he has made an allowance of 50 .out files. I have over 600 in my folder (basically a copy of my BaseStation outlines folder) which again has never caused a problem before. I can't check that as 6.4.2.4 doesn't work on my PC after the white screen issue from earlier. Still running 6.4.2.3 without any issues whatsoever.

Tim,

It's an unsupported feature, always has been - not a BUG.

I see someone complaining now that Vignette doesn't work.

All documented features work as before at least on my system they do. Surely all you need to do to run 2.4 is to change the registry entry back to how it was?

Tom,

I stopped PP, changed the registry key Dword to 0, re-booted, and it still fails to load 6.4.2.4 properly. Re-installed 6.4.2.3 and with the Dword at 0 or 1 it works perfectly.

It's a bug.

QuoteIt's an unsupported feature, always has been - not a BUG.

So why publicise it?

If it's available AND documented, people will use it.

If it is being withdrawn, ok I have to live with that and try to find an alternative.

But this was an unintentional effect of "improvements".

And for me, nothing added seems to be of use!

Just trying to get up to speed on this one after a day out of the loop.

If you are trying to overlay outlines on a charts . that never has been a feature of PP , but Bev explained that you could do it by changing the registry...as Tom says , it was undocumented for a reason.....to stop folk dabbling in the registry.
If it was a feature , it would have been in chart options...overlay outlines on charts.

I think when Bev has  mentioned it, he has always refered to it as undocumented with the caveat that only if you are happy to change the registry should you try it.

AIP data "is" now available to overlay data on charts and has been for a while.

The latest addition , to add selected outlines is aimed at  standard users. It may have affected those who have "modified" their sw  in some way , and that is being investigated.

No great drama................and unlike the majority of sw writers  , Bev will respond
very quickly to any requests provided the problem is accurately described and the request is made via the group so that we can assess how many users are affected.

I'm not in a position to test this myself but would just like to make a comment.

If upgrading to a new version (and not making any changes to the existing setup) results in a software malfunction, surely there's something different between the versions.

To me that's a "bug".

I installed the new vwersion yesterday and all seemed ok, after my morning reboot PP wont even start and crashes on trying to open. reinstalled a previos version and same thing, doing a system restore now to see what happens

Update
After restore all ok but with version 6.4.2.1, re installed 6.4.2.4 and seams ok, the only diference now is a windows critical update on the 4/09 which is the restore point i went back to

I'd agree with the bug if it was affecting all users , but it isn't , just a handful who have "mofified" their registry files .

Either way , Bev has it in hand and will shortly be releasing an update thus catering for an extremely small minority of users.................thats what you call  a service ! ;D

Version 6.2.4.5 is now available which fixes the "outline on charts" problem for me.

Grateful to Bev for the quick fix (he probably regrets admitting to the option now  ;) )

After a false start with 6.4.2.4 and 5 resulting in a completely white chart, I thought I'd try something ...... so I went into options>>chart>>GPX Overlay>>Select GPX overlay, at that point PP crashed out. I restarted PP and repeated similar for outlines ... Options>>Chart>>Outline>>Select outlines, selected all, still a white screen. I repeated the GPX bit and bingo the screen is back as it should be.

Thinking about it, the 'white screen' occurred after I'd been into the GPX selection option when using 6.4.2.4.

Glad it's all sorted and I have posted my thanks to Bev on the PP Group.
