Title: Greetings from Coventry
Post by: MikeG1HGD on September 26, 2014, 06:01:44 PM
Hi everyone,

My name is Mike, i live In Coventry, and you will see from my user name that i am a radio amatuer with the callsign G1HGD.

I'm a long time airband listener, and have had a Kinetis SBS1 in the past, but found that i wasn't using it much and parted with it. I've kicked myself a few times since!

I've recently gotten back into the airband side of the hobby, and have been enjoying watching flights via the online websites that cover the ADS-B transmissions, but have taken the plunge and have ordered a used RadarBox, which should be arriving tomorrow.

I gather from reading various threads on this forum that i may have made the "wrong" choice with the RadarBox, but it was fairly cheap, and the last thing i wanted to do was to splash out loads of money on something that i might get bored of quite quickly....

Anyway, "hi" to everyone on the forum - i'm sure i will be asking daft questions at some point soon!! ;-)

Cheers,

Mike.

Welcome and thanks for the introduction.

Can I ask how much you paid for the RadarBox?  I might sell mine!

The receiver isn't too bad and the software has some good and not so good features.  As do other products.

And don't commit to a RadarBox network, live or delayed.  The cost is exorbitant and you can get all you need from the free tracking websites.

All I would add is that you can't provide raw data for PlanePlotter MLATs and don't expect any software upgrades.  But the RadarBox should complement your airband listening.

Have fun.

Hi, and thanks for the info.

It was £111 plus £10 postage, and is a boxed RadarBox Pro.

I was looking at a Kinetic Puck, which i would have prefered to be honest, but at £219 used it was almost as much as buying a new one, and the seller wouldn't budge on the price.

I'd gathered that subscibing the the airnav network was a mugs game, and i certainly won't be - why pay for the privilige of giving them info and seeing what you can see for free online anyway?!

If i get into it properly i will prboably get a Puck - i've read good reviews on them - i don't need the SDR facilities of the SBS3 as i have plenty of airband receivers on the go in the shack!

Cheers for now,

Mike
