The Radarspotting Advent Calendar - 2014
For a bit of fun and some excellent prizes, the Radarspotting Advent Calendar starts on 1st December 2014.
(http://radarspotting.com/images/smallcalendar.jpg) (http://radarspotting.com/xmas/index.php)
Each window has a "classic" aircraft silhouette. If you know the aircraft manufacturer and type you could win a prize. All you have to do is send a Personal Message (http://radarspotting.com/forum/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=1) with your answer to arrive BEFORE the end of each day. The message must be sent before 23:59 UTC. For example, if you know the silhouette for 1st December, your PM must be sent before 23:59 UTC on 1st December.
Remember, we need the manufacturer and model name/number.
The daily window cannot be opened before its UTC date.
All members can enter as long as they joined the forum on or before 30th November 2014.
The 1st prize will be the all new FlightAware receiver. This is the fifth generation receiver which is due to go on sale in January 2015 at a retail price of around US $600, depending on choice of antenna. This is a valuable prize that's got to be worth winning.
The package will include an internal magmount antenna. More details on the FlightFeeder v5 here (http://radarspotting.com/forum/index.php/topic,4705.0.html).
The prize is being funded by the forum and you could be the first person to own this compact receiver.
The 2nd and 3rd prizes are Taylor Made RF Limited (http://www.tmrf.co.uk/) Gift Vouchers to the value of GBP £50 and GBP £25.
(http://radarspotting.com/images/TMRF.jpg) (http://www.tmrf.co.uk/)
The winner will be the member who gets the most correct answers. If necessary, there will be a tie break.
A maximum of one entry per member per silhouette.
Some of the silhouettes may be difficult and the most complete answer will prevail. Each correct answer will be worth 1 point and the 12th and 24th windows have 5 "head on" silhouettes and can earn a maximum of 5 points for each date.
My decision will be final.
The Advent Calendar can be found here (http://radarspotting.com/xmas/index.php).
All PMs will be acknowledged so make sure you check your Inbox.
Answers will be added to the Advent Calendar at the end of each day.
Full results will be published at the end of the competition.
I send my pm today-------but have not received an acknowledgement for it.

I send my pm today-------but have not received an acknowledgement for it.
I received your PM with your answer for the 1st December at approx 18:00 UTC on 1st December. I acknowledged it by PM at approx 18:12 UTC on 1st December.
I have not received an entry for 2nd December.
1st December Silhouette
Only 34% of the answers were correct. Well done to those who had a correct answer.
The following are acceptable:
Canadair CL-66
Canadair CC-109
Convair 540 or CV-540
Convair 640 or CV-640
Engine make and fuselage length distinguish these from other Convair types.
2nd December Silhouette
An easier one with just over 50% correct answers.
Acceptable answers include:
Douglas F4D Skyray
Douglas F-4D Skyray
Douglas Skyray F4D-1
Douglas XF4D-1 Skyray
Douglas 4d Skyray
You can join in at anytime and win a prize.
Your decision is of course final, but are you sure about he F4D, the images I have seen show a distinctive triangular section at the back of the wing that protrudes beyond the jet pipe and also the tail in your silhouette looks to be narrower at the top and at a straighter angle than pictures I've seen of the F4D.

Thanks,
Tim

Your decision is of course final, but are you sure about he F4D
The silhouette is the prototype F4D-1 Skyray. Production models were slightly different but I'm accepting these as correct answers.
It's not a n F5D Skylancer as suggested by some, a Skyray derivative but sufficiently different to warrant its own designation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_F5D_Skylancer
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_F5D_Skylancer#mediaviewer/File:F5D_Skylancer_3-view%28EG-0049-01%29.gif
The XF4D-1 prototype is shown in the pic as it had undercarriage which folded towards the fuselage centre, the subsequent production models had undercarriage which folded into the wings as they had a larger engine.
Just for information.
Thanks Andy.
I'm running the competition for a bit of fun in the run up to Christmas. I'm funding the prize myself as a Thank You to the forum members. I'm spending less on my wife's present. ;) Radarspotting has no income other than donations which don't cover hosting, domain and other fees let alone competition prizes.
A correct answer is one that identifies the aircraft manufacturer and type. In this example, Douglas and Skyray are correct. Douglas and Skylancer are not.
I'm more than happy to be challenged on any answers but the deciding factor will be as stated above. That's the fairest way to avoid on-going disputes.
Mike,
I understand completely and only posted that as a bit of info on the type as either model is still a Douglas Skyray and wasn't challenging your decision in anyway.
Andy. :D
Sorry Andy, I wasn't rejecting your comments. It just prompted me to explain how I was determining a correct answer.
I found your reply quite informative.
3rd December Silhouette
Only one incorrect answer, well done everyone.
Nord 2501 Noratlas
I'll accept any answer containing "Nord" and "Noratlas".
4th December Silhouette
A bit harder than I thought. Les than 25% got the correct answer:
Boeing C-135 Stratolifter
It's not a KC-135 Stratotanker which has a refuelling boom..
5th December Silhouette
Very easy one, Lockheed C-130B Hercules
I'll accept
Lockheed C130 Hercules
Lockheed C130
Can I remind everyone:
"Remember, we need the manufacturer and model name/number."
Some are omitting the manufacturer.
6th December Silhouette
I was in two minds about the correct answer.
It's a
Shin Meiwa PS-1
Some have used the manufacturer's later spelling of ShinMaywa, which I will accept.
Others have suggested it's a
Shin Meiwa US-1
But the US-1 has landing gear housed in a prominent bulge on the fuselage whereas the PS-1 has "beaching gear" without the bulge. There is no bulge in the silhouette.
And some have hedged their bets with:
Shin Meiwa PS-1/US-1
Having thought long and hard I've decided to only accept :
Shin Meiwa PS-1
ShinMaywa PS-1
And remember we need the manufacturer and aircraft type.
7th December Silhouette
An easy one:
Beagle-Auster A.109 Airedale
I'll accept:
Beagle A.109 Airedale
Beagle A109 Airedale
Keep on submitting your answers as it's a very open field at this time.
Any chance to know a partial classification? :)

Any chance to know a partial classification? :)
Do you mean who is leading so far?
Not just the leader, maybe the classification table on days 10 and 20, or something like that. Whatever you want Mike, you're the boss :)
I am going to publish the "leader board" after day 12 which should be a tricky one. ;)
8th December Silhouette
This was more difficult than I expected.
It's a Boeing B720.
I'll accept Boeing 720 or Boeing 720B.
The Boeing B707 has a longer fuselage.
9th December Silhouette
Most got this:
Canadair CL-28 (CP-107) Argus
I'll accept:
Canadair CL-28 Argus
Canadair CP-107 Argus
Canadair Argus
10th December Silhouette
Potez 840
Not a Potez 841 which had different engine nacelles nor the Potez 842 which had similar engines to the 840.
The silhouette is the Potez 840 prototype with only one side window in the cockpit. Later models, including the Potez 842, had two side windows.
11th December Silhouette
More knew this than I expected:
Shanghai Y-10
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shanghai_Y-10
Hmm - never heard of that :-[
Quote from: IanH on December 12, 2014, 03:01:45 PM
Hmm - never heard of that :-[
You didn't need to. Just had to recognise the silhouette.
I never said they'd be easy. ;)
I think we are in the realms of "known unknowns" and "unknown unknowns" ;D
Over 60% answered correctly. So not that hard. :)
12th December Silhouettes
These were easier than I expected, except number 2 which was:
Saro A.37 Shrimp
With the, later, single rudder.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saro_Shrimp
http://www.aviastar.org/air/england/saunders_a-37.php
Only one person answered this one correctly.
Half-way stage Leader Board
With 12 Advent windows opened, here is the Leader Board at the half-way stage.
There are a total of 16 points at this stage. Those scoring more than 10:
15 points - N69120
14 points - nickowen
13 points - Breitling
13 points - IanH
12 points - Blueboy
12 points - Thermionicmick
11 points - G4UMW
11 points - Joolde
11 points - Xon
10 points - DdePruis
10 points - vc131a
There are 12 remaining windows with another 16 points to be won. Plenty to play for.

Could You post all answers?
Quote from: Xon on December 13, 2014, 10:44:24 AM
Could You post all answers?
Yes, sorry my oversight.
12th December Silhouettes:
1. - Potez-C.A.M.S. 141
2. - SARO A.37
3. - Hall PH-3
4. - Aichi E16A1 Zui-Un
5. - Fiat I.C.R 42
13th December Silhouette
Easy one again:
Saab A 32A Lansen
Could I just double-check yesterday's answer Mike?
Wasn't the 32A the strike variant with underwing hardpoints, while the all-weather fighter variant was the 32B?
Do please correct me if my source has these silhouettes the wrong way round! Whichever it is, I only gave you half an answer anyway!
Congratulations on a varied and testing selection of silhouettes so far. Hope they don't get any harder...
Cheers
Nick
My thinking was the same but also I couldn't find a pic of an A without the pointy cowling shroud above the exhaust. But I must echo the comments of Nick, the varied questions have been brilliant so far.
Andy
You're both correct it's a 32B. I should have read the description more carefully.
But it doesn't matter as I accepted all answers:
Saab 32 Lansen
14th December Silhouette
Another easy one. I must try harder!
Sud-Est S.E. 161 Languedoc
I can also accept:
SNCASE SE161 Languedoc
Bloch M.B.161 / Sud-Est S.E.161 Languedoc
15th December Silhouette
This one was not as easy as I expected:
Daewoo KTX-1 Woong-Bee
I'll also accept:
KAI KT-1 Woong-Bee
KAI KT-1 Woong-bi
KAI KT-1 Woongbi
KAI KTX-1 Woongbi
KAI KT-1
Hmm, maybe not as easy as you expected as the silhouette didn't really look like the plane!
Your silhouette clearly showed the horizontal stabilizer stopping sort of the rudder whereas the actual aircraft has the stabilizer over-sailing the end of the rudder. Maybe yours was another prototype.
Not complaining - just saying ;D

I don't think that's a fair statement and more had the correct answer than didn't.
My silhouette is a prototype from a Janes' publication. I don't have access to photos of all prototypes at all stages of development so have to accept Janes' example.
Having carefully checked it again, I'm more than satisfied that the silhouette "looks like the plane" and is different to alternative answers such as the Tucano and Pilatus PC-7 Mk II.
I'm with Tim on that - horizontal stabiliser is in completely different location - much farther back just like the others in the same class (Tucano, PC-9).
Rejected it based on that.
Should have looked here :( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KAI_KT-1_Woongbi#mediaviewer/File:War_Memorial_of_Korea_(summer_2013)_008.JPG
So perhaps the correct answer is KAI KTX-1 ;)
Ian is right, the exact answer is KAI KTX-1, the prototype for the KT-1:

Hi Ian
I didn't get an answer from you form the 15th silhouette?
I couldn't find one that matched.
Checked out PC-7, PC-9, Texan II, Tucano, TAI Hürkuş, KAI KT-1, PZL-130 Orlik as turboprop trainers but none matched the silhouette so I didn't bother to enter assuming that I was on the wrong track.
Only found the KTX-1 photo once I knew the answer.
Edit:
No problem with no score for Day 15 since I didn't find the match to the profile of the KTX-1 :)
And the wikipedia entry for the KT-1 says "The KT-1 is bigger, heavier, the tail surfaces are relocated and it has a more powerful P&W Canada PT6A-62.(950-shp)"
16th December Silhouette
Another tricky one, but most had the correct answer:
Boeing 717
17th December Silhouette
Tu-204
The Tu-214 has two main doors ahead of the fuselage, not one.
18th December Silhouette
Too easy:
Antonov An-32 Cline
I'll accept:
Antonov An-32
19th December Silhouette
Another easy one.
This time a Let L-410 Turbolet (prototype)
I'll accept:
Let L-410
Let XL-410
20th December Silhouette
Too easy:
SEPECAT Jaguar
...prototype.
Unable to access today's picture.
21st December Silhouette
Fokker S.14 Mach-Trainer
Ta!
Almost gave up on that Fokker S14 - then my brain recalled seeing it 49.5 years ago (at Amsterdam) ;D
22nd December Silhouette
McDonnell F2H-2 Banshee
Two days to go and 6 points to be scored.
23rd December Silhouette
SAAB-21R
Just one day left with 5 silhouettes to name.
24th December Silhouettes
Sorry for the late post, Christmas Day got in the way.
1 – North American F-86F Sabre
2 – Vickers-Supermarine Swift F-1
3 – De Havilland Sea Venom N.F.20 (I'll accept Venom NF)
4 – Yakolev YAK-16
5 – Handley Page Hermes 4
Congratulations to our three winners:
1st - N69120 - 31 points
2nd - nickowen - 29 points
3rd - IanH - 28 points
I'll arrange delivery of prizes as soon as I can.
The quality of entries was higher than I expected and I'd like to thank everyone who took part.
And I hope everyone had an enjoyable Christmas.
Thanks for setting up this competition Mike and for funding the prizes. I had no chance of winning but I still enjoyed the chase, so to speak.
Well done to the winners especially N69120 - 31 points is outstanding.
Best wishes to all for 2015
Tim
I will repeat Tim's thanks to Mike for organising this fun exercise.
31 points is just one wrong answer, so well done N69120.
And I can't believe I managed to get all of the last 5 correct. First 3 were "easy" but there was no way I could believe my initial impression of DC-3 and DC-6 for #4 and #5 were going to be correct for the deciding day. Had to dig around a bit. ;D.
Most annoyed about not being aware of the Chinese 707 clone. :-[
Thanks guys, it was definitely a fun challenge!
Mike that was great fun and also an education when looking into aircraft origins and variants. Thanks for organising a fantastic quiz.
My only mistake was not listening to my father when he said it was a C135 Stratolifter on Day 4. Lesson learned. ::)
The Saro Shrimp was the one which took me the longest to research as the tail really was confusing.
A great time was had, not sure of what to spend my free time on now! May have to converse with the wife now :-X Lol.
Cheers
Andrew.
Thanks Andrew.
I never expected such a high standard of entries and was amazed by the answers and detailed explanations that accompanied many of them. If I do a similar competition in future I will have to make them much harder.
There are some very knowledgeable members here.
Thanks for organising the excellent competition and congrats to Anrew for his fantastic performance. I'm sure everyone had a great time doing the quiz and speaking for myself I learnt a great deal.
Roll on next Christmas.
Carl.
Could I echo all the above comments - thanks to Mike for such a varied and (at times) challenging selection.
Congratulations to Andrew - that could so easily have been a full house, which would have been quite remarkable given that some of these types were really quite obscure. I'm just relieved that so many of them were from my own (1960s) era!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.
Nick
Congrats to the winners, I've lost the podium just the last day. Thanks Mike for this funny contest.
QuoteI'm just relieved that so many of them were from my own (1960s) era!
Ssshhhhh - don't give away our secrets ;D
