Hello everyone
I have just bought a radar box and not having any luck
Using win 8.1 and have the correct drivers I think
When I boot up the latest software and it starts to initialise
It finds the rb1.
Then carries on.
I then come to the enter password screen
How do I get a username and password am I not supposed to have a years free subscription
So I run it in demo mode. And the hardware status stays red. Checking.
Question. Can u use the radar box in demo mode .?
Hoping someone can help
Ivan
You should have a CD with the Radar Box - that has the "Activation Code" on the front of the cardboard sleeve.
The Activation code shows the Username and Password.
If no CD contact the seller.
Welcome.
I assume you're referring to the 12 month's free delayed network subscription? You should be entitled to that if you bought a new RadarBox and demo mode is just that, a canned demo.
Can you post a screenshot of the screen requiring a password?
I'm guessing it's this one. If no Registration details entered, it won't start except in demo mode.
Ivan, can you confirm?

Thanks Ian.
Thanks Ian
That's the screen. No details can be found on the cardboard cd cover.
I bought the package last week from w&s
So am I correct the the radar box will not work in demo mode
The fields in the screen are empty. Ie it looks different from when I run the demo mode without the radar box connected
Ivan
I have also tried to contact air nav support but very slow in responding and when they do the reply seems automated

Correct. You don't need a RadarBox receiver to run the demo.
Contact Waters & Stanton and ask them for your account activation.
Don't expect too much from AirNav Support.
Thanks Ammer
I understand the password is tied to the serial no of the radar box
I will ring them tommrow.
I rang them today and they said the radar box will work in demo mode
I bet they can't help and yes I am getting that impression the air nav are like a chocolate fire guard
Ivan
I'm not sure the Username and Password are tied to the box. The two items are linked but probably work on any box.
Just checked - same Username/password worked on two different boxes ???
Got one very cheap ;)
Ok Ian
Will give them a ring and get them to sort it out or they can come and collect it and send me a new one
Mine was the 99 pound offer so if it works I will be quite pleased.
Will it work with any other software
Ivan

It will also work without the receiver.
Anyone can download a free demo from the AirNav website, no receiver required.
Ask W&S where you can get your password for your RadarBox. Failing that, ask them for a full refund.
Air nav are supposed to be sending me one.
I will just have to wait anther 24 plus hours for it to happen
Thanks for your hep Anmer and Ian
Update.
Just got the registration details from air nav
And they don't work
Try with the latest software:

Hi Anmer
I have tried all the software
Spoke to w&s and it is going back for a replacement out of the new stock they are expecting next week
Got the impression that this is a problem know to them

"New stock"?
I'd be surprised if AirNav is manufacturing new RadarBoxes. If you get one, let us know what software version is on the CD.
I will do an Anmer
I will be surprised as well can't imagine new stock at the current price.
But the package I have here won't work so I have no option but to send it back I have spent all week trying to get it to work
What else is available at a sensible price. That works ?
I'm assuming the supplied code is something in the form of:
Username: PGANRBxxxxxx (where x= a number - total of 6 numbers)
Password: xxxxxxxxx (where x= a number - total of 9 numbers)
There have been reports on the AirNav forum of difficulties getting it to work with Win8.1.
Not sure if it is everyone using Win8.1 but seems to be a problem with AirNav not providing signed drivers. :o
I'll try to set up a Win8.1 Virtual Machine later to see if it works for me with my working code.
Nic Story has done a write up on how to get Win 8 and Win 8.1 going without it asking for signed drivers. This was for the zadig (dongle) drivers but may also help with AirNav as well:

If you're looking for an alternative I would recommend a Kinetic 1090 Puck. Probably more expensive than a Radarbox but it is excellent. I've had a Radarbox for 6 years and just bought a Puck, there is no comparison. It was very easy to setup, especially following Amner's excellent review and guide in the 'Guides' section on here.
Nigel
Thanks Nigel
I have been looking at the puck but just might jump in and go for the srb -3
But will choose carefully this time
Ivan
Thanks IanH
Yes that's the format of the codes they gave me
The only difference was that the anrb was lower case but I have tried upper case as well
Ivan
Not had a lot of luck getting the ANRB running on a Win8.1 VM. Eventually got it installed (version of ANRB50072 was the first one with files missing!). But although claiming it can see RB1, it does not appear to really be connected - no plots - that might be a VM problem.
But the major reason for trying was to see if my serial/username combination worked in Win8.1 - IT DID
It also told me the account was no longer valid since a long time ago - of course on closer checking it meant the "free" sharing account.
If you abandon the Radarbox, consider why you would go with an SBS-3 instead?
I have one but I bought it 2nd hand for not much more than a Puck. It does have the SDR radio but I only use that occasionally. My main reason was for its ethernet connection.
If you are not bothered about ethernet or SDR, go for a 1090 Puck. Like the Radarbox it has a USB connection but there the similarities seem to end.
IIRC, 1090 Puck is half the price of an SBS-3 ;)
Hi Ian
Yes the software on startup found the Rb1
So I assume the drivers were installed
Only when I try and put in supplied codes I get the codes don't match warning box
Still thinking about the 3. Like the idea of sdr receivers built in then I can listen to atc as well
Radar box going back tommrow for a exchange so will see what happens

I hope Waters & Stanton are paying for the return postage?
On a real installation of Win8.1 (rather than as a VM) Radarbox software finds the Radarbox and plots.
Thanks to Tim for how to bypass the Win8.1 signed drivers restriction although I need to contact Nic Storey to add the missing bits for those basic instructions!
Yes anmer they are.
Just tried it on a windows 7 lap top and it's just the same
Will be asking them to make sure the codes are on the cd cover
I take it they are no software problems on the srb -3 and windows 8
I'm running an older SBS-1eR with Basestation 1.2.3.180 on a Win 8.1 box, I don't think you'll have any problems if you go down the Kinetic route.
Thanks keef
I concur with Keef - the technical support for Kinetic products from the user base seems better than for Airnav. And Chris Taylor (tmrf.co.uk) comes on here at times - he is based at Elstree in the UK so he can't hide like Airnav ;D
If I get time, now that I've got Win8.1 installed, I can check that my SBS-3 works on it. Just need to install BaseStation and divert the SBS-3 output to that PC.
Edit: no problems at all with BaseStation 1.84. Note that was ethernet connection not USB.
Thanks Ian
Looks like a sbs-3 is on the cards
Have also been looking at the puck but I like the idea of the built in sdr recievers for acars and atc

Poor you - why did you exchange your hard earned money for a piece of crap ?
I have been "Sabre rattling" about this piece of crap until people got tired of hearing me.
Do not complain in AirNav Forum - you will be banned immediately.
Just as an aside, I have a SBS-3, but since paying $8-75 for a R820t2 dongle and the freeware Modesdeco2 decoder (which can use your Basestation database, I find I get just as good results on Mode-S reception.
I run the above with ADSBscope, PBLink2 and ADSB-Display simultaneously to cover all of my needs.

Depending on your antenna and its location, I found a DVB-T "dongle" could provide similar coverage to the SBS-3 but over time it delivered less aircraft messages.
I think the SBS receivers offer a higher quality, message decoding package but at a price.
One gets what one pays for.
I agree with Anmer. Using a good quality antenna (and downlead) a DVB-T dongle can obtain impressive results. But it cannot compare with a FPGA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Field-programmable_gate_array) based hardware. With a dongle is the computer which carries the whole decoding workload, on the other side it is the SBS box by itself.
