Get yourself Stellarium for free, it's a great program
http://www.stellarium.org/
If you have an Android smartphone or tablet, try the free Google Sky Map app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.stardroid&hl=en_GB
Stellarium is pants on an IPad.
Get Star Rover or Star Tracker.

Maybe a rhetorical question, but why does the app need access to the Device ID and call information ??????

Possibly to achieve a more precise location when using the device?

The app also requires Location information - that I can understand.
But Device ID & call information is defined as "
Allows the app to determine the phone number and device IDs, whether a call is active and the remote number connected by a call"
Why does it need that - big brother ???
