Had an early model off this when BT started to sell them.
You put phone no's into the phone, then go into settings and tick the ones you want to call into your vip list, anything else that is number with held or no number is blocked and gets a message saying they cannot get through.
Anything that is showing a number will show on the screen but will not ring, you can then if need put that number into your vip list.
The vip list are the only numbers that will ring the phone. So it cuts out unwanted calls.
Hi Graham
I have the BT8500 too and it seems logical.
I added my known contacts (landline and mobile) into the Contact list and these are not intercepted. You can also marek other numbers as allowed or add them to a VIP list.
Other numbers get intercepted and are asked to announce their name in which case the call is forwarded to you and then you can choose how to handle it.
The included Manual explains all.

Thanks for spotting the bad link. Rushing out, poor excuse.
I too have one of these they are brilliant. No nuisance calls since purchase.
One comment I would make is Mike is not correct with:

The vip list are the only numbers that will ring the phone. So it cuts out unwanted calls.
Any numbers in your contact list will ring the phone without any interruptions. The VIP list comes into play if you use the 'Do not Disturb' feature - during that time period all calls except those in your VIP list will either be blocked or go to the answer phone. Great if you like a good night's sleep.
It might be worth pointing out the system only works effectively if you have caller ID enabled, without that, every call needs to be an announced call.
Tim
I got an earlier model, only calls in my vip list get through by ringing. the rest just show on screen, I don't use answer phone. ;D
I am about to go live :-\
At this moment in time I have more telephones scattered around my modest abode than there are in the B.T. tower!!
Thanks again for all your valued comments.

Numpty question,is the international dialing code 44 or 0044?

G.B.
If you are dialing the UK from abroad it's 0044 or +44 if using a mobile.

The best " call blocking " feature I have ever used is to locate the long button on the side of the phone and give it a long press. The screen then went blank and I have peace of mind. ;D :) ;) :D ::) 8)

35 years ago, 1980, I had this $ 50 "Call ID " device that displayed Incoming Call number.
If I don't want this number to ever call me - I activate "Block". The calling party will hear a "ringing " tone but my phone is as quiet as mid-night.
Good for filtering out unwanted Fax Advertisements.
