Title: What's this?
Post by: Triple7 on June 15, 2015, 06:56:20 PM
Just for idle curiosity really.......

I found this on my living room floor the other day, it looks to be a fuse of some sort but I have checked all appliances in the vicinity and everything works, so I am at a loss as to where it came from.

It's approx 23mm long x 6mm in diameter.

If anyone knows I'd be grateful so I might be able to track down what is now, probably, not going to work.

Thanks,

Tim

Looks similar to an automotive bulb but the twisted filament doesn't

Could it be out of a radio?

I honestly have no idea where it came from - it just appeared on my floor. The only "radio" I have is my AVR receiver but that still works fine.

Baffled.

It looks old-fashioned but I think it is a kind of fuse. This is a modern one you can usually find on microwave ovens to protect the magnetron:

I also think it looks more like a lamp.

Anything gone dark lately ?
Maybe some device, not normally used, but that was carried from A to B ?

A fuse,  like those in Breitling pictures, would have some indication of voltage (eg 220V) and current (eg 1A) stamped on the metal nase.

Thanks to all who replied here and in the Chat section.

It is a lamp, I put 12v across it and it lit, but not very brightly so I am not sure what voltage would be required for it to give any meaningful light.

I'm still none the wiser as to where it came from but at least I know what it is now.

Maybe a car boot bulb?

The filament suggests a lamp rather than a fuse.  Do you know anyone with a "classic" car?

I checked my car boot bulb, it's similar but larger in diameter and it still there, so it's not that  :D

I'm afraid I don't know anyone with a classic car - apart from Smudger but his Charisma failed the MoT test so he chucked it away  ;D ;D
