Title: How to make logos
Post by: BLACKHAWK101 on July 22, 2015, 08:15:57 PM
Evening gentalmen

As Paul M is still moving house and the need for logos is eating away at me its like a drug i am wondering if anybody has information on how to make them or a tutorial which would show how to make them.

Any help would be greatfully received, and i can then have a go myself.

I am on OS Widows 7 profesional and do have a full Photo shop suite.

Many thanks in advance

I'm sure someone more experienced than I will contribute but this is how I went about making a basic airline logo.

I use HyperSnap to capture images.  For an airline logo, this would usually be something suitable from its website.

Next I scale the captured image using HyperSnap to get it near to the 85x20 pixels image size that became a BaseStation "norm".

Again using HyperSnap I would resize the scaled image (by adding or removing lines and columns) until it was precisely 85x20 pixels. Depending on preference, I change the background colour to match my other airline logos.

I then save the final image in BMP format in the OperatorFlags folder, naming it to match the airline ICAO code.  For example, BAW.bmp.

Sideviews and silhouettes are more complex but the overall process is similar.  There are other image capture and editing software options.  I already had HyperSnap for business use and find it very intuitive.

Hi Steve,

This is what I do for my tailed logos in Photoshop :

File/New/Blank File
Preset – Custom
Width 85 pixels
Height 20 pixels
Resolution 72 pixels/inch
Background Contents - White
OK

Go to a website with a good side on view of the required aircraft and a website with the aircraft logo
Usually Wikipedia for the logo or type for example British Airways logo in google and select images and you should find one there. save both images to your prefered location.

Open the aircraft photo in Photoshop
Zoom into the tail so it is much larger
Select the Polygonal Lasso tool and proceed to cut around the tail until it is completely cut
Edit & copy

Open the blank 85 x 20 logo & magnify it to about 400%
Then go to edit & paste
Go to Image/ Transform/Free Transform click on one of the small squares in the corners, left click and drag the square over the blank logo until you have it situated in the right place and click the green tick
Then go to Layer & flatten layer

Now you need to try and match the colour scheme of the aircraft, I usually use the eyedropper tool on the photo of the aircraft to get the best match I can, I then usually use the line tool in various thicknesses to fill in the background of the logo.

If there are any other features on the aircraft that you want to show on the logo just use the same method as cutting the tail out.
Then go to Layer & flatten layer

Finally the airline logo, usually you can go to select all on your downloaded image and copy/paste and transform to fit the remainder of the space you have available.
at the end a final Layer/ Flatten layer
and then go to Enhance/ Unsharp Mask and set it to about 180, 0.2, 0
and save as a .bmp

It might sound complicated but you soon get used to it.
I think I have included everything to help create a basic logo.

I know I make good logos  ;D
but I'm not sure if the instructions were easy for other people to follow.
