And completely screwed up!
My ranking is rapidly going down despite feeding the same data while US feeders are climbing! Not bothered about it except for the assumptions in the calculations. I'll continue to feed because of the MLAT data fed back.
MLAT is typically only a small contribution for EU feeders while it is much larger for US feeders.
Supposedly according to Flightaware the Total=ADSB+ModeS+MLAT+other.
But some US feeders have a new MLAT contribution larger than the previous Total.
So given the explanation for the Total, how does MLAT>Total work?
There now seems to be some rejigging of the calculation method - we shall see how it ends up.
I tend to agree Ian and have emailed FA to ask for some clarification of the calculation and to show the ranked total.

I see you moved it to a new topic - thanks. Probably needed to be here rather than tangled up with another topic. Just wanted to express my frustration - as a scientist I get annoyed when someone reinvents "stats" without thinking it through >:(

I still prefer a written spec that's been checked out by all involved, especially "customers". I hate the phrase "end users". ;)
One month on and the new ranking system has completely changed the top 20.
In December the top 20 were all from Europe. Now just 2 are, with the rest from the US.
Whether or not that is the real picture, changing the method of calculation has had a dramatic effect.
Inclusion of MLAT makes sense but what does the "Other" category include? Seems particularly high for US feeders so is it GA and military adding to the total?
Anyway it was interesting to see where I was in the ranking before - not in top 250 - but now it is an irrelevance.
So I just switch on the Pi when I want the data. Probably getting the same ranking in a few hours as I would do all day given the number of BA Shuttle, FlyBe, Jet2, Ryanair that go back and forth ;)
Another change was to only count the same aircraft once in any 24h period so short haul flights using the same aircraft several times a day just count once now.

I have to admit I don't understand how the ranking is determined since the change.
I have been adding in a few thoughts on that over there ;)
But mostly interested in the useful addons people have come up with to enhance the Piaware software and also how to get the Orange Pi PC working.
For the OPi, manufacturer support is poor but I bought two because of potential and then actual support on FA forum. £16 for an OPi PC to feed FA (and which works fine) which then releases a RPi2 for other tasks that might be much more difficult for an OPi because of lack of support. Doesn't mean I won't try!
