I am looking for a reasonably priced SBS-1e, -er, -3 or Puck 1090. I already have a SBS-1e but would like to have a separate receiver for travelling, while my current receiver is picking up data 24/7 from my home.

If you really want a Kinetic product for travelling I'm not going to try and put you off, the hardware is good and I'm glad I have my SBS-1eR.
But for travelling I have gone down the 'dongle' route. Flightaware or generic 'DVB' are both good choices but with slightly different costs.
The advantages of dongles for travelling are:
Cheap (doesn't matter if I lose it or it gets nicked).
Low power consumption.
With Sergero's software feeding Basestation you wouldn't really know you didn't have a cheap dongle or a Kinetic receiver between your antenna and laptop.
No criticism of Kinetic products, just airing my thoughts to try and help you decide what is best for you.

I'm agreeing with Keef on the dongle approach.
I wouldn't bother with the Flightaware version for travelling. I suspect you are not after range, just what is in the local area. So an R820T2 dongle is fine and cheaper. Note the "T2" on the dongle type but even that might not be necessary for the additional performance (and price) over an R820T.
Compared to the price and bulk of a Kinetic product (and explaining to customs what it is), a dongle could be explained as being used for receiving TV ;) - yes really since that was what they were intended for.
Once you decide on that, you can still use BaseStation as the display program by converting the output of the dongle to BS format ;D

Just throw away the CD and remote. Possibly cut the antenna to suit 1090 better.

Thanks, and thanks to all who replied! I now have some reading to do. I do like the Basestation software but as people have commented the Kinetic hardware is somewhat difficult to carry and explain at security gates.

I travel extensively and take my Kinetic puck with me. It goes in my suitcase and it has never been a problem anywhere from a customs/security perspective.

I must say I looked into the RTL-dongle as well but I am quite pleased with the Kinetic product since 2009. Also the interchangeability is another thing that works better for me. I have an alert program running on my laptop and want to have the same configuration on the other set (Linx tablet).
I have travelled all around the world with my sbs-1e. Never had any issues at security. Only thing that has happened a few times here at AMS was the larger magnetic aerial. It has been picked out a few times but after explaning it was an aerial, it was ok.
